Portuguese Weather Institute rates probability at 94%
Rain tomorrow? The forecast of the Portuguese Weather Institute (IPMA) is for periods of overcast skies and a chance of light showers for today, Saturday 12 October. During the early weekend, they expect the wind to be light to moderate (10 to 30 km/h) from the western quadrant.
For tomorrow, Sunday, the situation gets a bit more unpredictable, and forecasts are definitely not encouraging, with periods of heavy rain expected by all the main forecasters. There will be a moderate to strong wind (20 to 40 km/h) from the southwest, running northwest from mid-afternoon, being slightly less strong in Funchal.
For once the various weather forecasts, which generally agree, are falling out. IPMA (the first below) puts the likelihood of rain in Funchal at 94%, whilst the second from the BBC shows it less likely. A note of caution here though, as the BBC website forecast does not agree with the BBC weather app for handheld devices, which shows a forecast with probabilities more in line with IPMA.
In the highlands tomorrow, the wind intensity will be moderate to strong (30 to 50 km/h) from the southwest, sometimes gusting to 85 km/h, turning northwest from mid-afternoon, so possible problems at the airport?
