Council siezes illegal street furniture

Funchal authorities continue to enforce licensing

The Journal reports that a team from the fiscal department of the Câmara do Funchal, together with Security Police, yesterday afternoon seized street furniture from esplanades that were operating illegally on Rua da Carreira, in the centre of Funchal. There is a high concentration of cafes and restaurants on this busy pedestrianised street, and the outside seating regularly “overflows” to the point where it can obstruct pedestrian flow.

The action apparently created some indignation from local businesses. However, according to the local authority, the traders were notified last Friday that they must remove what was not authorised. Checks have been taking place for two months by the Licensing Division who have identified what areas were not licensed and informed the businesses concerned.

Among other items, the team seized paintings, flowers and chairs. The action follows street furniture in being impounded in Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas and Praça do Carmo, also in Funchal city centre, at the end of May, reported here.
