Bathing season starts with 4 Blue Flags

€150,000 investment in Lidos

The City Hall of Funchal today marked the opening of the bathing season, hoisting the Blue Flag and the Affordable Beach Flag in the Lido complex, after an investment of €150 thousand in the four areas under its management.
“Funchal has six beaches with this distinction [Blue Flag], four of which are operated and managed by the municipality, through the municipal company FrenteMar Funchal,” said Mayor Miguel Gouveia.
The mayor said that the four bathing complexes are also served by blue centres, which sensitise users to good environmental practices.

The Blue Flag – a European symbol of seawater quality – is present in the Lido, Barreirinha, Ponta Gorda and Praia Formosa areas, also with Accessible Beach Flag, a sign that they are prepared to receive people with reduced mobility.
“For this, the work done by FrenteMar’s technicians, cleaning and recovery and awareness raising has contributed a lot,” said Miguel Gouveia, noting that the price list remains “virtually unchanged” despite the investment of €150 thousand made this year in recovery works.
Of the four bathing areas managed by the municipality, only Formosa beach is free of charge.

Miguel Gouveia recently took command of the Câmara do Funchal, led by a coalition, following the departure of Paulo Cafôfo, who is an independent candidate supported by the PS to the presidency of the elections of 22 September.
