High winds forecast tomorrow.

Winds of 100km/h possible in mountains

High winds clip artThe Portuguese “Met Office”, the Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), have issued a yellow warning for the mountainous regions  of Madeira due to the strong southerly wind that could reach 100 km per hour. The notice takes effect tomorrow from 6 o’clock and continues until midnight.

Today the wind will be weak to moderate (10 to 30 km/h) from southeast, blowing moderate to strong (30 to 50 km/h) from the south in the highlands starting this afternoon. It is also expected to be mostly cloudy, with periods of cloudiness in the eastern part of Madeira and Porto Santo until the end of the morning.

  1. Windy com states 19kt in afternoon towards airport If it looks bad bring pack up and something to read, make sure your mobile phone topped up, and take things in your stride

  2. First rule of weather forecasting – (probably written by Michael Fish circa October 1987 ) sound confident – be vague.

So, back to the moment in hand, the strong wind warning for the mountains does not , at present, extend to the coastal region where winds will generally be from a Southwesterly direction in the region of 20 knots gusting 26 at times and are forecast to decrease and become more westerly in direction, later in the afternoon further reducing the possibility of any disruption to flights.

However there is the potential for disruption and diversions later on Friday and into Saturday morning as there is risk of an area of low pressure developing to the east of Madeira causing the winds to swing to a northerly direction averaging 20kts with gusts of up to 28 kts.

That’s my take on information gleaned from the ECMWF pressure chart and Windfinder.com figures and I think there are at least 7 words in there that cover my backside if none of it comes true lol !!!

Hope it doesn’t if you have a flight booked for later this week !
