Porto Santo Ferry Captain retires
The Journal reports that Commander João Bela makes his last trip in charge of the Porto Santo Ferry, the Lobo Marinho, tomorrow. His career spans 22 years, 584 thousand nautical miles navigated, and a total of 6,800 trips in Madeira, equivalent to 27 complete laps of the Earth, at the helm of ships like the Patria, the Independence and, especially, the Lobo Marinho, who he has commanded since June 2003.
In an interview with the paper he says that the appetite for nautical activities began at a very young age, being born in the bosom of a family connected to the sea.”The sea was already in the blood,” he noted in an interview with JM.
The commander considers it a privilege to have commanded the ship which he says does “an exceptional job in the Region”. He also thanked the company that entrusted the command of this ship in him for so many years, and praises the crew that accompanied him, without which he admits he would not have been able to do the job he did.
