22,300 unemployed in Madeira

At the other end of the income spectrum, unemployment continues to climb in Madeira. The new figures released today by the Institute of Employment and Vocational Training account for 600 more unemployed than revealed in last Tuesday by the Office for National Statistics.

Boutique Lido chain disappears?

More economic bad news is that the bakery/cafe chain behind the highly popular “Boutique Lido” pastelaria beneath the Raga Hotel on the Estrada Monumental in the Lido appears to have closed. The very busy cafe  “Boutique d’Ajuda” behind the Forum also closed at the beginning of August and shows no sign of re-opening. Difficult to see why an apparently successful organisation like this should run into troubles, but of course a lot of businesses are now having to pay increased IVA (VAT), typically payable 3 or 6 months in arrears – and the majority or goods and services moved from 16 to 22% earlier this year.

Five-day festival in the village of Ponta Delgada

This year the festival of Senhor Bom Jesus, in Ponta Delgada, which traditionally occurs on the first week of September, will last for five days. The festivities kick off on Thursday, August 30, and only end the following Monday, September 3.

  1. Following the comments on bees, we have noticed the complete loss of frogs in the river at the bottom of our property. They used to make a terrific racket!Even my father in laws water storage tank had a thriving colony 2 years ago – all gone. We did notice quite a few big dragonflies this year; first time we have seen them. The Strawberry world debacle is causing great embarrassment to ordinary Madeirans who feel great concern at the treatment of visitors to the island.
We managed to hire our car locally 25 euros per day – full any driver insurance – no deposit “pay when you bring it back” thanks to brother-in-law Lino for your help! Massive thanks to Miguel who when father in-laws car broke down on a day we had planned “espetada in the woods” closed his business for the day and brought his car to join our group and we had a fantastic day in the mountains.
Less thanks to easyjets staff at Funchal who are clearly making it up as they go along. TAP from now I think!

  2. And of course Monach from October 3 times a week.
    Their pricing seems most equitable.
They have extra legroom and allocated seating.
    BUT will it last?

  3. For the first time ever we are flying TAP when we come over next month. We manage to come over around 5 times per year and have always found Easyjet the most competitive. If they are not careful they will shoot the goose that lays the golden egg.
They have stopped flying from Stansted, which was only an hour away from us. We are carefully looking at Monarch prices.

  4. It was a blow for us that the Stansted service ceased.
The airfield being 30 minutes from us.
Monarch if they do a year round service could pick up quite a lot of the Gatwick business of both TAP and esyjey because the departure times are much later in the day, making for more civilised travel.
I am in favour of civilised travel.
I wish the US would leave either RAF Lakenheath or RAF Mildenhall,
They would make perfect commercial airfields.

  5. Steven, car deal was through a local car dealer who has loan cars for customers – so the car while perfectly serviceable (they are mechanics and repairers after all!) it wasn`t new. My brother negotiated for us – he knows everyone! I don`t know if it would be perfect for everyone but it`s worth checking local car dealers and mechanics where you are. deal we got was `special` – but if you don`t ask, you don`t get as they always say.

  6. Yes, Monarch are definitely flying here now on a Monday from Gatwick and have done for a number of weeks. What we would like is Easyjet to fly from Liverpool here as Jet2.com to/ from Manchester isn’t cheap. I am surprised that somebody hasn’t jumped on the fact that there is a need for flights out to Madeira north of London! Thomson and Jet2.com fly to/from Manchester Airport and even Thomson won’t allow you to book a flight on-line from here to Manchester a month or two in advance.

We have flown back to Bristol on two occasions with Easyjet and, for the price we paid, on both occasions we got what we paid for and we had no complaints whatsoever except for the accents of the cabin crew!!!!!!!

  7. Monach will be doing 3 days a week, monday, wednesday and friday from Gatwick and 2 days a week from Birmingham, monday and friday
Late October is the start time and November flights are already filling judging by the rises in price.
There are three price groups one of which has extra leg room and weight of baggage.

  8. from dnoticias Madeira on yellow alert due to heat

Four districts of mainland Portugal are today under yellow alert, the third worst on a scale of four, due to the heat, reports the Institute of Meteorology (IM) on its website.

The districts of Bragança, Guarda and Faro are under yellow warning until 21:00 today, while Castelo Branco in the warning will last another hour.

Also the Madeira archipelago is under yellow warning until 21:00 on Thursday.

Of the 27 regions analyzed by IM, 21 will present today a value of “very high” ultraviolet radiation (UV), with rates between eight and 10.

With the level “very high”, the IM advises the use of sunglasses with UV filter, hat, t-shirt, umbrella and sunscreen, stressing also that one should avoid exposure of children to the sun

Ultraviolet radiation can cause serious harm to health if the level exceeds safety limits, according to information available on the “site” of the IM.

The index has five levels of this radiation, between “low” and “extreme”, the maximum being 11.

The IM provides for today in mainland Portugal clean or slightly cloudy sky, appearing cloudy with mist or fog in the north and center to the middle of the morning, especially on the coast, and can persist in the coastal region to the center midafternoon.

It also included lowering the maximum temperature in the South and the Tagus Valley.

The maximum temperatures are planned for today of 33 degrees in Faro, Lisbon and 29 º 23 º in Porto

  9. As you will be aware finding out the dates of festas etc in Madeira can be a bit difficult. I have looked on the Calheta camara website and some dates are listed but because some of the religious ones wander around the calendar, in relation to the date of Easter etc , not all have dates listed. I don’t know if anyone down the west end of island can help me out with these for 2013.
Is the Porto Moniz agricultural fair always the second weekend of July?
Loreto and Arco da Calheta have separate celebrations for Espirito Santo (with the charolas) The last 2 years the one in Arco da Calheta has been first weekend in July. Is this the case in 2013?
My neighbour says that Espirito Santo with charolas in Loreto ,is first weekend in June 2013 and Santissimo Santo when the priest walks on the flowers in the road ,will be the second weekend in June 2013 . However she also said that that Santissimo Santo is the ninth Sunday after Easter which in 2013 would make it the first weekend in June so now I’m really confused. I have family who want to arrange a trip when there is a traditional celebration going on hence the question. Also has anyone been to the sheep shearing event and have any idea when that might be?

  10. Its crazy that Monarch are flying on Mon/Weds/Fri from Gatwick. precisely the same days as Sleasyjet from the same airport! That leaves no service on Tuesdays & Thursdays!
also does anyone know when/how the roof of the impressive new Funchal cruise terminal will finally be entirely covered with 6 foot high weeds. they’re growing exceptionally well at present so it cant be long. what an impressive welcome to Madeira which can also be seen from several places in the City!!

  11. We went once to the ‘sheep shearing event’ mentioned by Karen. There were 8 sheep!!
The Agricultural fair outside Port Moniz however is one of our favourites. We always marvel at how we see the same drunk guy passed out next to the giant flower ball everytime we go!!

  12. Hi,
I’ve just found this site, as I’m looking for some help!! I received an e-mail from strawberry world today telling me that the hotel booking I made in January and paid for in full wil now not be available? eight months have gone by and they have not paid for my booking at the CS Madiera….My booking is for the 14/08/12 , really nice of them to leave it till now to inform me(2 weeks to my holiday) Sorry this really stinks!! What a load of crooks, they must have taken thousands of bookings and pocketed the money… and are now bleating on about the economic climate doing them in, I don’t think so..

Anyway can anyone give me more information on this, as reading various reports I believe this problem started weeks ago, it’s very odd but my one booking appears o.k. but the CS Madiera will require payment again.
    Any info would be welcome
    Thanks
