Chit-Chat & Today’s Photo … Local Lizard
TODAY’S PHOTO : Thanks to Tobi … Local lizard licking leftovers
Following on from yesterday’s theme about old wives tales and urban legends, and today’s picture, over time I have noticed that many locals are terrified of our little lizards, sometimes referred to as Lagartixas, though I don’t think it’s the real species name. I thought maybe it was just the sight of them (like rats and spiders) or maybe they are associated with disease, as they certainly couldn’t bite anyone without teeth. Men and women alike fear this wonderful creature.
So I asked … and was told some things. I didn’t believe them, so I repeated two stories to someone else who confirmed them to be true, and I asked a third person, and again confirmed. The first story was of a woman sleeping on the beach, and a lizard went up her nose and into her brain, and killed her. The second story, again a woman sleeping on the beach, also died after a lizard entered a different orifice, which I couldn’t possibly mention. It was as this point I heard a third story from a local, again about a woman on a beach sleeping, this time in Funchal. The local, was actually an eyewitness after the event to the body being carted away, and he said the lizard dug through her skin and into her body, killing her. I asked him if lizards have teeth, and he said no, and couldn’t explain what he had seen.
Anyone else know any other urban legends or ‘old wives tales’ … I won’t hold my breath just in case!
