Today’s photo – Many thanks to Martin

"First visit was to see the Madeira wine Story in the Old Blandy Wine Lodge in the centre of Funchal. Their museum has many historical items [letters from Winston Churchill ] and artefacts on winemaking in Madeira. Wine is still made in the lodge and we followed the progress of the production of the wine with the added pleasure of wonderful smells coming from the maturing wine in the barrels". ANOTHER WINE BUFF’S STORY

A few great photos from the New Year 2010 firework display FUNCHAL FIREWORKS

And from Tobi from New Year night in Funchal … "My photos were rubbish and to much smoke, there are a couple that are passable" :

madeira news blog 1001 tobi new year fireworks funchal 2010 1 I really liked this video of a TAP flight taking off from Madeira Airport, especially the close up shots. Even watching it on a computer screen, I felt my right foot ‘pressing the accelerator’ as it sped off down the runway (am I the only person who does that when taking off, are there like minded ‘foot on the gas’ people?). But was the pilot playing Bingo?

"Arthur Pita presents his new dance-theatre creation God’s Garden, which will tour this month and next (from Jan 23, Jerwood Dance House, Ipswich). The volcanic paradise of Madeira provides the setting for a piece based on the parable of the Prodigal Son, here imagined as the golden boy of the Costa family. The piece boasts live fado music". From the UK TIMES Newspaper, a chance to see Madeira without getting on a plane perhaps.

Tobi found this one … "this is a good vid of the fireworks, its filmed from high up , and you can really see the shape of the fireworks a lot better". Thanks Tobi.

Many thanks to Elaine once again for yesterday’s top new year news stories :

Postman attacked with pepper spray. The attack occurred in São João in Funchal. He was distributing mail when approached by a group of individuals who asked him for money. After a negative reply, they threw an orange liquid at his eyes which temporarily blinded him. The bombeiros gave first aid then transported him to hospital. The PSP were informed and are investigating. Pepper spray is illegal for civilian use. It irritates the mucous membranes and the effects can last from 30 minutes to nearly two hours.

PSP agent prevents a suicide in the old zone of Funchal. On December 20, the speed and ‘cold blood’ of a policeman prevented a tragedy. Near the cable car, around 13.00, a 34 year old man was leaning over the sea wall and screaming that he was about to kill himself. He said he would throw himself into the sea if anyone approached him. As there was not enough time to wait for the trained negotiator, the PSP agent approached the man, undetected, grabbed him and pulled him to the ground. The man was eventually taken to hospital. The 33 year old officer has been in the force for 11 years and said, "It was the first time I came across a situation like this, I knew I had to act quickly and fortunately it ended in the best way."

Transfer of fuel. The tanker ‘Madeiro’ arrived on Christmas Day and has been unable to unload due to bad weather. Now with a break in the stormy weather, the island’s power supply is guaranteed with the stocks re-inforced. The ‘Madeiro’ has discharged part of the 18,000 tons of fuel in its tanks, which are vital for the supply of major power companies and other industries, and should finish unloading today. On Sunday, the tanker is expected to visit Porto Santo but the forecast is for 4 – 6 metre waves, which might prevent unloading. The Porto Santo ferry is not scheduled to sail today, but the passengers who came to Madeira for the New Year should be able to return tomorrow.

PND want Toco in the rubbish bin. The damage caused in the recent days by the bad weather justifies the suspension of the project for Toco in Funchal, according to the PND. The recent storm damage to the swimming pool complex at Barreira necessitates the Government to readjust its coastal policy. As well as the lack of money, the fact that other promenades and the Barreirinha swimming complex were badly damaged, means that the project for Toco should go into the dustbin.

Day of the City of Santana without anyone from the Government present. There will be no members of the Regional Government present at today’s official celebrations of the Day of the City of Santana. Rui Moses explained that invitations were sent out later than expected. Also, the date is not very convenient and needs to be changed. Santana was elevated to city status in 2001.

Left Bloc proposal for the centennial of the Republic. On 5 October 2010, Portugal will have been a Republic for 100 years. As well as national celebrations, the Left Bloc wants regional events. A draft decree for a regional commission to be set up, will be delivered to the Legislative Assembly for discussion in January. It is justified as the region is part of the Republic and both Madeira and Porto Santo should be proud of this fact. The autonomous regions were created by the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic and this fact should be highlighted throughout the year. The regional committee should report back in April for celebrations to be held in the second half of the year. There should be events honouring the spirit of the Portuguese although President Jardim no longer harbours strong feelings for the Portuguese.

OCM aims for new record. The Classical Orchestra of Madeira want to record a new album in 2010, having launched last November a compilation of five discs dedicated to Mozart. The conductor Rui Massena wants to release a more commercial disc. It could be fusion or film music or Vienna Waltzes. The Orchestra is still without a residential base. They will depend on negotiations with Pestana about continuing the use of the Casino before they can plan beyond March. The island requires a new hall with acoustics suited to concerts.

Eurico Martins wants more regional interest in the Bandolins. Eurico Martins is the director of the Recreio Musical União da Mocidade, (Bandolins of Madeira), a group made up of nine youngsters from São Roque. The director wants to hold more public concerts in 2010. They aim for a tour of the UK this year, including Bristol where they have had a good reception in the past. Performances will be held weekly at 21.00 on Fridays at the English Church in Funchal. There is a performance tomorrow at 21.00 at this location.

Free performances of Cantar os Reis. 6 January is the Dia de Reis, and to celebrate it in Madeira and Porto Santo are the performances ‘Cantar os Reis’. At the auditorium in the Municipal Garden in Funchal, the Associacoa Cultural Encontros da Eira will host a free show at 21.30 on Tuesday 5th January. In Machico, the performance will be on Saturday 2 January at 20.30 in the Largo da Praça. At Porto Santo, the show will start at 21.30 on the 5th January, in the Largo das Palmeiras. All shows are free.

Thousands of Euros in gold stolen. Thieves burgled a jewellers shop in Rua do Bom Jesus in Funchal on the night of  25 – 26 December at around 1.30 am. They stole 60 gold necklaces, some worth 1,500 Euros, despite triggering the alarm. They disappeared before the police arrived.

Elaine also found these articles in the New Year’s Day edition of the Jornal da Madeira. Many thanks.

Cuisine combines with the New Year’s Eve party. New Year’s Eve in Madeira, or reveillon, as many prefer to call it with the use of foreign words, typical of a tourist region par excellence, is an event appreciated by Madeirans. Inevitably, as the festa was celebrated at the table with plenty, New Year’s Eve is another reason to gather family and friends. But those who have neither home or family living in the district of Funchal, overlooking the amphitheatre, continue to celebrate New Year’s Eve by carrying food and drink to the chosen location to see the fireworks display. There is not an exact menu for New Year’s Eve, however being a special night and traditionally cold, one cannot miss the delicacies to "warm" the body and soul.

At the table there are many liqueurs with various aromas and flavours, new wine and our traditional Madeira Wine. In small dishes are served the "teeth" (dentinhos), normally pickled vegetables, stewed beans, pig’s feet, stewed offal of chicken, and meat in wine and garlic. In terms of sweets, home made bolo de mel, cheese, and broas de mel. Under the influence of large areas of food distribution, the "bolo rei" is also present.

At the time of celebrating New Year’s Eve, superstitions come to the fore. A piece of new underwear, money in the pocket, raisins and champagne are among others. The famous 12 raisins represent the 12 months of the year. It is believed that if you make a wish with every piece of dried fruit you eat, they will become a reality. After the euphoria of New Year’s Eve and fireworks, it is an ideal time to enjoy reinvigorating chicken soup, served hot and according to tradition, accompanied by chicken sandwiches. All around the region, New Year’s Eve supper is not much different, although in some counties a festive tradition leads many families to taste other delicacies.

In Porto Moniz, the Festa is seized by many families for the traditional "Carne Santa", a mixture of beef and pork marinaded overnight, mainly consumed on Christmas Eve but also tasted during this festive season. Alongside this traditional dish, on the table in the north is "Semilhas Bêbedas", potatoes cooked in wine. Also in the north, "Carne da Noite" cooked with potatoes, pork products from the recent "funcao" made with dry wine, accompanied by vegetables. On the south coast, particularly in Machico, the emphasis is on tasting "Bucho de Porco Recheado". Traditionally served at Christmas, this delicacy is enjoyed at the table until the festivities of Santo Amaro. In Santa Cruz, the tradition is the "Carne Frescal" which is somewhat similar to meat in wine and garlic. With white wine, red wine, Madeira Wine, herbs and garlic, the meat is marinaded for three days then baked in a pan. In Funchal, the lead role is taken by two dishes; roast pork with potatoes or chestnuts and chicken in the pot, following the traditions that pass from generation to generation without major changes.

Funchal welcomed thousands in the farewell to 2009. Thousands and thousands of people descended into Funchal. With the help of good weather, the capital of Madeira "was alert" already with some movement, and the tourists were the largest "slice" of those who thronged the streets of Funchal. Our news team made a circuit of the city and found that, indeed, the "smell" of the new year was already in the air. We started by going to the Mercado dos Lavradores where flowers, typical or not of Madeira, were the most photographed and acquired. The flashes did not stop going off.

After a walk around the space which that night would be the scene of celebration, we went down Rua do Visconde de Anadia to the Praça da Autonomia. Of the six stalls located there, two were already open by 10 am, selling the bolo do caco and bread with chorizo. Ahead of us on the promenade by the sea, the seller of roasted chestnuts was doing business with the tourists from the three ships which were already docked in Funchal, "Queen Victoria", "Boudicca" and "Aida Luna". Three more ships would arrive later, the "Amadea", "Oriana" and "Saga Ruby". Next to the stall of chestnuts, company officials responsible for the fireworks display tended to the material already placed at the stations ready for the stroke of midnight. On the pier hundreds of people watched the bay from the capital of Madeira and some posed for photos.

We walked up the Avenida Zarco and travelled throughout the central area of Avenida Arriaga. There the movement was even greater. Many, many people visited the various Christmas projects that the Regional Government, through the Regional Secretariat of Tourism and Culture, conceived for that space. In front of the building of the Regional Government, in the bandstand put there, a band played "Adeste Fidelis".  At the tables on the nearby terrace, as well as on the concrete benches scattered around the avenue, the avenue was crowded with people. "Fantastic" we heard a foreigner, probably British, say to her husband as she photographed the crib next to the Se.

On the return to JM, we passed along the streets João Tavira, Queimada de Cima e Baixo and the Largo do Chafariz. No time to enter the establishments, we launched a sneak peek inside some of the shops, noting that many had chosen to buy a new item of clothing for the entry into 2010. There are many superstitions, one of them for example, enter the new year wearing a piece of yellow clothing. The Rua dr. Fernão de Ornelas was also full of people. Increasingly, we heard the words "Bom Ano". Already at the end of the morning and near the closing hour of our edition, folklore groups roamed the main streets of Funchal leaving an increasingly festive atmosphere. As we guessed, a great New Year’s Eve, as always.

Today’s news headlines from the front page of the Diário de Notícias :

(The truth is I didn’t expect a newspaper today, so I will have to keep it short as I have other things planned).

Most of today’s front page is taken up with a magnificent photo of the night sky over Funchal, lit by an abundance of assorted colour fireworks : Luck with the weather helped fortunate firework display – The magnificent spectacle ‘Ilhas Afortunadas’ was the usual success and counted on the help of São Pedro. But the night saw several fires, an injury through a ‘bomb’ and some people in alcoholic comas. 19 thousand tons of fireworks and 97 thousand explosions guaranteed the success of the night of the new year, but the show had luck on it’s side through the weather which eased off for the night. Somehow I doubt if it was 19 thousand tons of fireworks, but the Diário seems to be littered with mistakes today, but hopefully not through alcoholic comas. Not many photos, but you can see some small but excellent ones HERE in the Diário.

Today’s main news headline : Heroin at the front of the fears – At least in this decade, it is the first time that heroine tops the list of various types of drugs seized on Madeira. This hard drug causes greater damage than cocaine and the others of the type.

Socialist against gay marriage – The parliamentarian Carlos Preira  concedes on the union of people the same sex, but is against the PS from there on the idea of marriage.

Lara was born in Funchal in the first hours of 2010. The first baby of 2010 was born at 1.35 in the morning of 1st January, weighing 3 kilos and 700 grams. She is called Lara, and already has a three year old sibling. Mum even managed to watch the Funchal fireworks before the birth, albeit through the windows of the maternity unit.

And finally the sports / football headline : Public return timidly to the stadiums. More than half of the growth of spectators derives from the influx at the Stadium of Light [Benfica]. The overall crowds at the first 14 matches throughout Portugal saw a growth of spectators of 5.4% compared to the same period in the previous season. The 7 home games of Nacional have so far attracted just 14,680 spectators (9,275 – 2008), whilst Marítimo fared better as always with 27,651 paying fans but with a considerable fall (38,294 – 2008). There’s a chart with all the figures HERE, but again it has a few obvious mistakes.

If anyone else can oblige with the translation of any of the ‘blank’ or sparsely filled headlines, or other news stories, here is the link. All contributions much appreciated.

Another daily blog visitor record set yesterday, with a whopping 594 visits, mostly looking for information or footage of our new year firework display.

I reckon the nets at the offshore fish farm at Campanário must have broken again, as looking down to the beach there are loads of fishermen there again this morning, and the numbers seem to be growing daily. The fishing bonanza now seems to be an annual event, always after rough seas,  and must cost the owners of the fish farm a small fortune in losses.

A sneak preview of the first Christmas lights that were switched on Friday. I recommend you turn the sound off first …

Enjoy your public holiday today – A trip to Porto Moniz Aquarium sounds nice!

November was a good month for blog visitors, the best since the new format. Over 3,000 different visitors visited nearly 9,000 times. I hope our sponsor is pleased. Many thanks for those who have supported it during November, and whilst there are several people who deserve credit, Elaine stands out for providing another whole month of news stories without a day off. The following stories included :

Tradition of singing the Charamba dying. The cold was felt at the site of the mill Ti Jesuina situated at Estrada Camacha/Poiso but it did not cool the enthusiasm of the participants at the Fifth Meeting of Xarambistas. The event was scheduled for 15.00 but started at 16.00 The five participants ranged from the ages of 70 to 81 years old and were accompanied by a 49 year old playing the viola de arame. An enthusiast lamented: "The charamba is dying because children are not interested in this artistic expression that comes from our ancestors. And the people who sing, because of their age, also are disappearing."

Machico Council vote themselves out of a Christmas dinner. Saving internally so as not to compromise the street festival. The decision of the Municipality of Machico ‘debunks’ the traditional Christmas lunch for the officials and also the gifts for their children. The decision was well accepted by the 200 employees with 60 children affected. "Our priority is to keep the festivities in the county and people understand why because they also feel the crisis at home." The same number of light bulbs as last year will be used to economise. The festivities will begin on December 6 with an opening play entitled, ‘The True Spirit of Christmas’. Circus Brazil starts on December 11 underneath the airport runway. On December 20 there is a Gospel Christmas concert in Forum Machico. The live nativity scene from December 22 is in the cultural activities room in the Junta da Freguesia. The Christmas Program 2009 ends on January 10 with the Singing of the Kings in Santo da Serra from 15.00. —- A true Christmas spirited Council!

Edificio Santa Luzia wins award. This is one of the contemporary Portuguese buildings to receive the award IHRU 2009, to promote municipal and regional buildings. Designed for the Housing Investment of Madeira (IHM), the award is from the Institute for Housing and Urban Regeneration. This apartment block contains 10 apartments for people with reduced mobility and includes an elevator, garden and communal room. It is designed for single people or couples, especially the elderly.

‘Excellence’ lobbying against civil construction. The delegates of APAVT (congress of the Portuguese Association of Travel Agents and Tourism) praise the "intelligence and courage" of Conceição Estudante (Tourism Minister). This is due to the region having already taken a significant step in the direction of alerting politicians and those responsible for the tourism sector to environmental sustainability. This had led to the region being classified as a ‘Destination of Excellence’. The strategy pursued by her is thought to act as a very strong lobby against civil construction, the major cause of deterioration in the quality of our tourism product. The tourism product has been degraded by overbuilding, insensitive urban planning and not enough defence against building and cultural heritage. Poor management of the law of supply and demand is also a problem. The growth rate of supply has been much faster than demand and not adjusted accordingly. There should be no new licensing until the occupancy levels recover to above 65%. As far as Funchal is concerned she is a good few years too late. Uncle Bertie won’t be pleased that one of his cronies wants to cut back on concrete use, how will the shareholders survive? Der

Funchal represents 45% of energy certification. This figure shows that this is the most active area for the real estate market. These certificates for energy efficiency and air quality have been awarded since 2001, a total of 2,881. The most (46.4%) of those in Funchal have been awarded in São Martinho. These have been awarded for all new buildings, those rented and those sold. The second main area of activity is Santa Cruz where 60% have been awarded in the parish of Caniço. Other counties have relatively few certificates issued, either due to a stagnant property market or the councils not enforcing the law. In the case of residential buildings, these certificates are valid for 10 years. The responsibility is the seller or owner of the building and they should be checked by the legal bodies when contracts are concluded for sale and/or lease.

Rescue effort off the Desertas Islands. At 15.00 on Friday, the crew of a French vessel sent a warning message that the João Amndio fishing vessel was adrift with no crew activity on board, despite normally having a crew of 10 men. Fears deepened when the contacts of the Subcentro de Lisboa went unanswered. The Maritime Search and Rescue Centre in Funchal, Maritime Authorities and the navy launched a rescue effort. Two SANAS semi-rigid lifeboats were launched, one from Santa Cruz and the other from Funchal, and the naval patrol boat put on standby. The rescue effort proved unnecessary as the crew were all safe and were having a rest period with the person on watch away from the VHF equipment at the time, which is why he did not respond to the message.

Câmara de Lobos firemen discontent over non-payment of updated salary. They should have had their salary increased by 2.9% on January 1 2009 but have only received additional pay since September 2009. Some firemen also complain about inconsistencies. The president has appointed a relative into the corporation, who receives almost double than others in a similar position. They also complain about money spent on the 60th anniversary party and the Christmas party. The president, Rui Fernandes, is an ex-deputy of the PSD and also president of the Municipal Assembly of Câmara de Lobos. He argues that this criticism is just in bad faith as the anniversary party was also to award merit badges. He denies there is an unwillingness or refusal to meet with the union leaders as there is another meeting in January. Also, the firemen have no grounds for complaint as they have good working and employment conditions. Nepotism in the fire brigade, hard to believe I know, and I wonder who might set such a bad example? Der

Judicial Police seize more heroin and hashish in 2009. Quantities have already surpassed those in 2008. The amount of hashish has almost tripled and heroin increased from 57,469 to 73,800 doses. In contrast, cocaine has decreased remarkably from 632,395 to 21,400 doses. The major seizure last year of cocaine was of 57 kilogram or 570,000 doses at the airport in Operation Check Out, probably not all for the regional market. There were 78 people arrested this year for trafficking compared to 43 last year. Three firearms have been seized this year in relation to drug trafficking.

The port is too small for the number and size of cruise ships visiting.  The photo taken yesterday illustrates the problem; when two large cruise ships berth at the South Terminal and another at the North Terminal, the port has exhausted 90% of its capacity. The increase in length and tonnage of cruise ships means that for 18% of days of this year, the port has exhausted its capacity. The large cruise ships circuit can include Southern Portugal, Madeira and the Canaries. A large ship can represent an income of 12 -18 thousand Euros for APRAM (Ports Authority) and another 150,000 Euros in revenue for companies that provide tourism services. On December 15, there will be four large cruise ships visiting meaning that the Oriana has to berth offshore. The passengers are mainly over 70 years old and many will be unable to use the ship’s tenders to visit the island. Eight cruise ships are already booked for the last night of the year. A ship unable to berth and having to stay offshore looses the Administration of Ports 40% of revenue and penalizes local businessmen, as only 30% of passengers come ashore. The present investment for development of the port is the most important decision taken for a long time due to the limited size and increasing size of ships visiting. This topic was continued in another article stating that next year, there will be 24 days when the Port of Funchal cannot receive any more ships. 20% of days there will be three ships and for four days there are four cruise ships booked, and for another three days, five booked simultaneously. March, April, November and December are the months when capacity is limited. In 2010, there will be newer and larger cruise liners visiting. The new Queen Elizabeth is due on 21 October 2010.

Five arrested for attacks on the police. Sporadic violence occurred in Funchal and Câmara de Lobos. The first incidence occurred on Friday in Funchal when three men were detained for violence against an officer. On Sunday in Câmara de Lobos, a man and a woman were eventually arrested after intervention by the police. In Machico, a man was arrested for possession of a bat and a knife.

Corpse of a tourist found at the bottom of a ravine. The body of a tourist who was missing since 19.00 last night has just been recovered this morning from a ravine of a depth of 80 metres. The 30 year old was separated from his parents in Levada da Lombada in Ponta do Sol. The mountain rescue team of the bombeiros recovered the body.

German camps in the Almirante Reis garden. A German citizen aged more than 60 years old has lived there for over a month in unsanitary conditions. He came to Madeira as the weather is favourable for his illness. He sleeps in a small tent pitched by the walls of the hotel and is well educated, walks with difficulty, wears the same clothes and has hygiene problems. The Town Hall was not aware of the situation but now alerted, say they will quickly resolve the situation in a humanely way and a person cannot be allowed to camp in a public area which is also a tourist attraction.

Then my contribution from today’s front page stories … Der

Today’s main Diário headline : ‘Order of Doctors’ doesn’t want doctors to give advice against the vaccine – The doctors that judge inopportune that people submit themselves to vaccination against Gripe A swine flu, should not ignore the instructions of the World Health Organisation and the Directorate General, that are advising the take up of this precaution. So says the Order. Some doctors apparently have been advising their patients against getting vaccinated against H1N1, but that has to stop. These patients are considered as ‘risk groups’ due to age, medical factors, or pregnancy, and the instruction is that the ‘opinions’ of medical staff are not to be offered. Some doctors  have doubts about the product ‘Pandermix’ based on lack of tests and scientific studies about the efficiency of the vaccine. Some doctors are saying say it is better to strengthen the immune system with other methods, through rest, good nutrition and vitamin supplements. The president of the Order says that presently, there are pregnant women, parents of small children, and the chronically ill who do not know which is better: to take the vaccine or hope that the Gripe A flu does not infect them. There were 123 new cases of Gripe A confirmed by the Health Service last week. 57 are female, 66 male. There were 39 confirmed outbreaks of the virus in Madeira’s schools, a similar ratio to that happening throughout Portugal. I won’t be taking the vaccine under any circumstances, and have reinforced my supplies of © Toranja Poncha © over recent weeks as my means of prevention and cure, as well as it’s properties for aiding a good nights sleep during the early morning mega-bangers, due to start any day now. However as there are some who take things I say a little too seriously, I am not recommending this approach to others, who need to make their own decisions, and ‘the blog’ does not accept any responsibility for those who follow my chosen path. Besides that, the glut of cheap toranjas (grapefruit) that I have been enjoying for the last couple of a months seem to be coming to an end.

2009 is a black year in the economy of Porto Santo. Consumption plunged. Airport and port register sensitive losses of movement. We have been reading the stories for the last year or more, about reduced hotel occupation and travel, projects and developments stopping mid-term, or not even starting. The only recent positive highlight I remember was the opening of the new animal shelter, but I am not even sure now if that was just an election stunt and is still open. The golden island, two or more years ago, was the top of everyone’s  agenda, including Cristiano Ronaldo, for a new hotel. The island was hosting direct charter flights from Italy and the UK, and there was so much employment (low pay admittedly) that recruitment was focused on immigrants. Speculators and others were buying property at inflated prices. The article gives some stats on what is mentioned above in terms of economic factors,  but nothing we didn’t really know about before. It has to be said that Porto Santo is treated differently as a separate island, and clearly has differences, but in reality the other regions of Madeira, especially outside of Funchal, are suffering in equivalent and similar ways, but don’t get the same media attention. At least Porto Santo still has it’s own separate weather forecast, whereas the rest of us are usually lumped in with Funchal, regardless of climatic considerable differences.

Institute of Francês Marie Curie studies levadas. A French investigator, Jean-Luc Sabatier, has come to Madeira to study our network of levadas, and will stay here for two years to complete his work in the study titled ‘Irrigation and Society’. He will focus on the anthropological and sociological perspective of the famous mountain waterways, funded by a grant from the prestigious Institute Marie Curie. I just can’t go on with a straight face … it’s another ‘jolly in disguise’, despite lots of technical justifications in the article. How do people get these jobs, as I certainly don’t see them advertised in our newspapers? If I come up with a study, say the ‘Saltiness of the seas around Madeira’, or ‘Regional differences in the beers of Madeira’ will someone stump up the dough to pay for me to ‘research’ for two years … please email me if you can.

Haylofts and huts in Chão da Ribeira cause controversy. Reconstruction and widening of the structures result in a meeting between the council of Porto Moniz and the Natural Park. This story one I will leave for someone else to translate … thank you.

and finally, today’s football story : World Cup 2010 : "Portugal are going to feel at home". Eusébio is already in South Africa. He revealed his expectations to the Diário about the final stage of the Wold Cup. Portugal’s ex-most-famous-footballer is already in South Africa, sussing out the situation ready for 2010. It must only be in today’s printed edition of the Diário, as I can’t find it online. Dare I mention the ‘J’ word once again?

That’s all from me news-wise for now, as the Diário advert for the car sale at the Technopolo has smothered the links into the pages and individual news stories, and it can’t be closed down to delve into the newspaper. I presume everyone is on holiday at the Diário, which is why the fault still hasn’t been corrected by 10.30 am. Elaine has found a way around the problem if you look in the comments. Thank Elaine.

I already mentioned that today is ‘Restoration of Independence’ day for Portugal and Madeira, and as such a public holiday … for some maybe. At 6.22 am I was awoken by a grand rumpus … the local band starting playing at that time of the morning … just one song … and then they stopped. Well, it was too late by then to return to deep slumber. Restoration of Independence indeed, how about restoration of my lost sleep! This is normally the sort of comment where a blog sniper pops up and says ‘why don’t you move away from Madeira if you don’t like it’?, so just to pre-empt such a stupid comment, the answer is I don’t want to. Why are the snipers out in force this last few days I wonder, maybe not much doing on the Madeira Island Bulletin Board (for a change!), where some snipers often lurk, or just pure Christmas humbugism … who knows what drives these people? Do they sit at home and watch TV programmes they don’t like, and then write in and complain?

Protective Barriers Accumulate Problems ; Head-Lice Plague ; Madeira Assisted Charles Darwin

May 23, 2009 By: admin Category: Madeira & General News

(23rd May). ‘Hospital Sends Records Far Away’.  I am not quite sure what this is doing on the front page, but there you go. A Funchal hospital is to move 80% of it’s archive records from Funchal to Porto Moniz, with the rest going to Campanário. The documents contain medical records and registers, and is all about saving money. Consideration is also being given to microfilming and digitally capturing these records.

This week it was reported that the protective barrier for the beach of Ponta do Sol, which cost €3.2 million, is poorly built and will be removed and rebuilt. But by the look of things, this is not the only infrastructure of this type along the Madeira coastline, which is causing problems. Reis Magos (Santa Cruz), Machico, and Ponta Delgada are now also causing some controversy. Reis Magos is a clear case of poor planning, and often attracts criticism from bathers and environmentalists, as well as from other partisan forces, including the ex-president of the council who opposed the building of the structure from the start. A problem that arises, even before these concrete monstrosities are complete, is the accumulation of mud and debris inside the structures, which cannot escape thereafter. This puts-off bathers from using them, preferring to swim in the open seas instead. The one at Machico seems to be a collection point for oil slicks and fish remains, because of its proximity to a fishing port. The water quality is now considered at several locations to be at risk, and hence the ‘Blue Flag’ status could be unobtainable in the future. The same structures at Calheta and Ribeira Brava are also discussed in the article. In the case of Ribeira Brava, the older barrier has actually made accumulate lots of sand in the bathing area. So much so, there is now a small sandy beach. Every year the water gets shallower and shallower, and I would guess in few years time it will be suitable for paddling only. The other newer barrier is much more of a problem, as incoming waves push the mud from the river (mouth) into the protected zone, and it is quickly filling up with unpleasant muddy sediment. The president of the council of Ribeira Brava says at the moment there is nothing to see (no problem), but I think his head lives where the sun don’t shine, so that would probably explain his comment.

The president of the Institute of Health Management and Social Affairs (IASAÚDE), explains that the current problem with head-lice is recurrent and affects every year, pupils in the public and private schools of Madeira. The problem is not necessarily caused by lack of hygiene, clean hair or not, long hair or short. However, the lice are easily transmitted through close contact (head to head) or by sharing hats, brushes or even pieces of clothing, and it is then that comes the problem of prevention. School kids are the most vulnerable group, and when one get it, the whole family have to be treated. In one school recently, several cases of scabies were also identified, and the health service had to come in to intervene. As a school pupil myself, I am lucky to have an unbeatable and 100% natural protection against head-lice, so my school pals are never at risk with me.

A 45 year old woman was detained at Madeira Airport on Thursday, after being caught with 16,584 heroin doses. The haul had a street value of over €330,00.

Madeira’s contribution to the investigations of Charles Darwin were discussed yesterday, at the Municipal Museum of Funchal, in a conference arranged by the Retired Teachers Association of Madeira. The contribution of the region derives from research connected with two naturalists, who lived on Madeira. "They sent many copies of their work to Darwin, which were essential for the compilation of the book ‘The Origin of Species’ " said the speaker. She also noted that many species from Madeira were sent to the researcher, such as crab parasites, which come only from the region, identifying five new species to science at a worldwide level. However, the contribution overall was immense, also with species of insects and plants. "They were a great help for Darwin in writing his book" she concluded.
