On Saturday there was an article on this blog about the seasonal fruits of cherries, strawberries, and ‘medlars’ (nesperas in Portuguese) being sold on the streets of downtown Funchal. At the time I had no idea what a nespera was, or even if the translation to ‘medlar’ was strictly correct, even though it was in my dictionary. Someone gave me some nesperas on Tuesday night, and I have to say they are delicious. They are small roundish yellow fruits, about the size of a large strawberry, and have just one or two large pips and a lovely juicy flavour, even if they don’t look that attractive with a few skin blemishes. The article said they are seasonal, so if you want to try don’t wait too long.
