Malmsey in Madeira : Owain John, Assistant Manager at Majestic Aylesbury (UK), visited Madeira in September ’09, funded by the Vintners’ Bursary which he won following the WSET Advanced exam. Here, he reports on his trip. "Touching down at Funchal airport is one of the more hair-raising landings I’ve experienced. The Madeirans are very proud of their smart, new, but rather short runway on stilts over the ocean, which features on many of the postcards available for sale on the island. This was just about the last flat piece of land we were to see for a whole week. Our hire car may not have been the most powerful around, but it is still disconcerting to find yourself having to change down into second gear on a dual-carriageway". FULL REPORT

A really good photo I found on Flickr, with a nice write up too. WINDING ROAD

From Becky (in the UK?) … seems to be prevalent in the news over here today.  I think the poses could be worthy of a caption competition as he looks like he’s just missed the Porto Santo ferry in the first one.  (Yes, I know he’d never actually have to travel via means of the ferry, but I won’t let fact stand in the way!) CRISTIANOS NEW CACS

"Fancy pan-fried frogs legs with chervil sauce or steamed wild sea bass with oyster tartar? These are just two of the creations Chef Antoine Westermann spoils his guests with at The Vine, Design Hotels™’ newest member hotel in Madeira. At UVA, the hotel’s gourmet restaurant, the award-winning chef creates fusion cuisine at its best. Locals have also discovered this gem – for its culinary delights as well as the spectacular views". CREATIVE PUBLICITY I have not seen this ‘Madeira’ theme website before, but if it attracts tourists, then I am happy to give it a bit of free publicity. All the pages I looked at were empty, but give it time …

Many thanks to Elaine once again for yesterday’s top news stories :

Nina has been found and returned to the circus. The circus dog Nina, reported missing yesterday will return to the show tonight. A woman found the dog wandering the streets, not knowing who it belonged to until she read yesterday’s article in Jornal da Madeira.

Portugal’s economy not doing very well. Two reports in Jornal da Madeira. The economies of Portugal and Greece are at risk of a "slow death", according to an alert issued yesterday by the rating agency Moody’s. The view of the experts at Moody’s is that there is no risk of a "sudden death" but that "the probability of a slow death" is high unless there are improvements in economic competitiveness and ability to raise taxes. The Minister of Economy admits the situation is "difficult" with 0.7% growth predicted this year and 1.4% in 2011. Unemployment level is 10.3% compared to the European average of 8.8%. —Indirectly affects the economy of Madeira, especially as at present the ministers are trying to alter the Regional Finance Law so the State will have to transfer more money and also pay for a new hospital in Funchal etc.

Golf should be seen as a long-term project. (Again, Jornal da Madeira). The vice president of the Regional Government believes that golf has helped combat the seasonality of tourism on Porto Santo. This year, the Madeira Island Open returns to Porto Santo between the 8 – 11 April. More than 100 professional golfers are expected to attend and the prize money is 700,000 Euros, the initiative is supported by Turismo de Portugal. The golf course is ranked ninth amongst the 100 best courses in Europe. Construction work has begun for the new course at Ponta do Pargo with a completion date for the end of 2011. The course was designed by Nick Faldo and is financed by private investment, including the British group Morgan Forbes. An area has been designed for professional golfers and another area for amateur golfers. An 18 hole championship course and a 9 hole pitch and putt course. The Club House will feature a restaurant, bar, shop, reception, changing rooms and other facilities. The natural beauty of the  surrounding area can be appreciated whilst playing a round. Local jobs will be generated and it is hoped this course will help put the region on the world championship circuit.

Employee stole, was filmed but it was the employer who was fined 940 Euros. In a bakery in Machico, the management suspected a 46 year old employee of theft. They installed video surveillance cameras and recorded the employee stealing from the till and taking bread, cheese, ham, butter and whisky from the bakery, with her husband as an accomplice. She already had a history of similar crimes when employed in a restaurant and a day care centre. The woman resigned rather than face criminal proceedings. She then appealed to the Employment Tribunal of Funchal and sued the employer. The case was found against the employer who were ordered to pay 940 Euros for Christmas and holiday pay. The law states that video surveillance is allowed only when it is intended for the protection and safety of persons and goods, depending on the nature of the business and is subject to authorization by the National Commission for Data Protection. The right of privacy is constitutionally protected. It cannot be used to evaluate the professional competence of an employee, their performance or (in this case) if they steal. This evidence is an improper invasion of privacy and violation of the right to make images of the employee. A similar case occurred in 2008 when a supermarket manager was caught stealing but the case annulled. The management can apply to the Court of Appeal of Lisbon.

Arcadia visits today during a 94 night cruise. Two cruise ships visit today, the Costa Serena with 4,900 Italians and the Arcadia with 1,900 British. It is of interest to note that the present Arcadia cruise is for 94 nights, visiting 34 ports in 23 countries. The ship left Southampton 10 days ago and returns on April 15th, via the Suez Canal. The Arcadia visits Madeira several more times this year. At the BTL in Lisbon (Tourism Fair), the State Secretary for Tourism, Bernardo Trinidade admits positive signs in the British tourist market this year but despite this, Madeira is still relying on the increased domestic market.

Câmara de Lobos Library costs an additional 426,000 Euros. The Court of Auditors has published a report stating that the work exceeded 11.7% of the value of the award to the three construction companies and the authorization for "additional works" was given by the mayor Arlindo Gomes although he had "no competence" (legal) to do so. The project exceeded the period of the contracted term by 92 days. The expenditure of 426,000 Euros was granted with no budget to support it, a further violation of the law. The original award was 3,640,692 Euros and the final payment was 4,067,365 Euros. Days before the publication of this report, Arlindo Gomes stated that the State should pay the Council 900,000 Euros for the construction work. The Court of Auditors can charge a fine ranging from a minimum 510 Euros to a maximum 4,080 Euros and all charges are directed at Arlindo Gomes.

BE want regional products in public dining rooms. The Left Block want a law drafted that gives preference to local products in public workplace cafeterias in Madeira. They recognize that it is often cheaper to buy goods produced elsewhere but, "The preferential consumption of products from abroad affects the regional economy, does not help to dispose of agricultural products produced in Madeira – with a clear loss to our farmers – and devalues the effort to produce high quality products which, fortunately, are abundant in the islands." The draft legislation is for a preference of regional products in all canteens and cafeterias in public establishments in the region. These are schools, hospitals, nursing homes, social centres, children’s institutions, etc. Imported products would only be used if there was a proven absence of supply in quantity and quality in the region.

Finance Law postponed. The proposed Regional Finance Act will not be discussed and voted on by the Commission on the Budget and Finances of the Assembly of the Republic in Lisbon, as timetabled. There is technical support showing that Madeira has lost 157 million Euros to the Law of Sócrates. The PSD has failed to secure parliamentary support needed to pass the law. They might not get a favourable vote by the CDS-PP, communists and BE needed to pass the law. The PS have argued for a delay and are preparing an alternative solution.

Cases of the day. A short circuit in a refrigerator/chest freezer badly damaged a kitchen and other rooms in a residence in Campanário. The owners had left for work and a neighbour saw the fire and alerted the firefighters. They had problems accessing the house due to the distance from the road. The couple and their daughter have been temporarily housed with relatives while the house is cleaned up and the damage repaired. Gold articles have been stolen from two homes on the same day. At Pilar in Santo António, the thieves broke in through a bedroom window and stole two gold necklaces and a laptop. That afternoon, in Fundoa in São Roque, thieves entered a house by forcing a door and stole gold jewellery valued over a thousand Euros as well as an air pistol. Last weekend, a 30 year old man was approached by a group of individuals while by the entrance of the Vespas nightclub. They suddenly attacked, punched and kicked him then the group fled in two cars. In São Martinho, at 19.00 on Monday, two teenage girls were approached by an unknown man. He grabbed one of them, a 14 year old, and started to sexually molest her but due to her cries and resistance, he fled then one of them phoned for help. The police are gathering evidence as they suspect an attempted rape. At the Port of Funchal, a 44 year old foreigner travelling on the ferry from Portimão was arrested having 7,152 doses of heroin inside his body. Several landslides and falling trees kept the fire fighters busy in Funchal and Ribeira Brava to clear the roads and keep them passable.

Tunnel at Curral das Freiras, only 1 of 4 defendants acquitted. In March 2003, four workers died and four others were injured when an explosive charge was detonated during the construction of the tunnel. Miguel Ângelo, the engineer responsible for the safety of the work was acquitted. Already, Flório Quintal in charge of the work, was sentenced to five and a half years in prison and considered the person responsible for the accident. He was the only person licensed to handle explosives and at the time of the explosion, he was outside the tunnel. Luís Miguel Freire, a geological engineer and Raimundo Calhau, the general contractor, were sentenced to four and a half years in prison. There was also a lack of supervision and training. The three intend to appeal.

‘Help Haiti Now’. Cruz Vermelha Portuguese (CVP) – the Portuguese Red Cross – have launched an appeal. The campaign has set up accounts at Milenium, CGD, BPI, Totta, BES, Montepio, Banif and BPN.

Santo Amaro tonight. One of the major religious celebrations takes place in Santa Cruz tonight when at 20.00, thousands of faithful are expected to take part in the procession from the Chapel of Santo Amaro to the Church of Santa Cruz. They will carry candles and images in wax. This saint, according to legend, prevented a young man from drowning and is revered by the faithful in times of crisis. Despite the high number of unemployed, the Canon does not see an increase in the number of devotees, instead the opposite. On Sunday, the Festa de Santa Amaro will continue with 40 stalls selling food and drink adjacent to Santa Cruz market. Program on WEBSITE (click onto Guia de eventos):

… and yet more from Elaine, with a special feature from the Jornal da Madeira :

The new document will allow, for two and a half Euros, access to all landscaped areas, children’s parks, as well as access to restaurants.

Theme Park launches card for residents. The Theme Park of Madeira, a work of the Society of Northern Development, a body subordinate to the Vice-Presidency of the Regional Government, has just launched the "resident card". According to the director of this facility, it is a product with two versions, one for women and another for men. He explained, this is a document that will cost 2.5 Euros and will allow people to come and visit throughout the year; the gardens, children’s parks, access to the restaurants of the park and Craft Workshops. To obtain this card, as mentioned by the Director of the Theme Park, those resident in the region, which is easily verifiable by the identity card  (Bilhete de Identidade) or another document with a photograph, fill out a form which is available from the services. Until now, there have been three annual passes; normal, which costs 30 Euros and the junior and senior, both 24 Euros. These are the documents that, according to Tiago Feitas, allow the visitor to visit the Theme Park as many times as they want, entering the pavilions and attractions. The new arrangement that started this year does not give access to the attractions.

In the new attractions planned for this year, Tiago Feitas says the desire is to promote an exhibition within the water mill, explaining to tourists how the water mill works. Please note that the Theme Park, "Has a water mill that, especially at weekends is put into operation, grinding cereals that are then taken to the ‘Casa de Santana’ where they are made into bread which is offered to visitors on Saturday and Sunday." According to him, this exhibition is already being prepared. Several photos of the craftsman who use these water mills have been made in order to show to visitors, in a very simple way, how they work and the authentic utensils. Another concern for this year relates to the gardens. According to Tiago Feitas, in the Theme Park they will select and plant throughout the year, plants that embellish and give a different colour and are more appealing in the enclosure.

‘Monte train’ will have a station. The Theme Park already has a ‘Monte train’. According to the director of this institution, "The ‘Monte train’ is a vehicle that is designed to make journeys for visitors. But it did not have a station consistent with the value of the attraction. Not only to shelter passengers from the weather, but also to create a picturesque area." Therefore, "We will build a replica of the Monte train station where people can have a lot of fun, taking pictures and enjoying that area while queuing for a trip through the enclosure."  The head of the Theme Park said they have created a space in the area of the artificial lake, where there are rowing boats, reserved for small remote-controlled crafts. Here as mentioned, the visitor is likely to stretch their talents to the "rudder" of the ship and carry out the steps which are required, for about three minutes. According to Tiago Feitas, this attraction for about three months, and despite not being included in the ticket – costing 50 cents, has already been a big hit with younger visitors and also among the older ones who accept this challenge of skill and adventure.

New pavilion comes from the history of the port
The pavilion "Roots of Madeira" is at present, according to the Director of the Theme Park, "The only virtual theatre that the region has and perhaps even the only virtual theatre that exists in our country." This space is in the auditorium of the natural park. According to Tiago Feitas, "Basically this is an area which explains the history of the port of Madeira." "This history" he said, "is from the period of discovery to the present day, explaining in an intelligent and fun way the development of the port, showing the evolution of the port and the importance it had for the various economic cycles of the region, and also explaining the importance of a port to an island." According to Tiago Feitas, "There are created, during about seven minutes, a set of scenarios that allow you to see the whole evolution of the port and the whole evolution of the city and the island through its maritime port." "The history of Madeira can also be told through the eyes of its port." The Director of the Theme Park says he is excited about this new product which was released in late November. It has been in great demand and has met the expectations of visitors who leave that space satisfied. It is noted that the end of the show in the pavilion "Roots of Madeira" is marked with fireworks which, according to Tiago Feitas, "Have left people very satisfied by the degree of realism and involvement that is provided. It is a very emotional end and people have left very satisfied."

Several improvements in 2009
The Theme Park was the target of several interventions in 2009. One of the improvements occurred in the pavilion "A world of islands – the islands of the world", which is considered one of the spaces that best illustrates the history of Madeira and its culture. As pointed out by the park director, "It has an improved set design that onto two large screens projects a light that defines each county, explaining each county and its respective parishes. This goes a little to meet our audience who can now understand a little better the division of counties and parishes in the Region."

The pavilion "Future of the Earth", as Tiago Feitas said, "Was previously a film that was called ‘There was a day’. It is a movie that calls for park visitors to be more sensitive to environmental issues. In 2009, we decided to create ‘a time machine where the visitor is invited to make a trip to the island of Madeira in the year 2419, exactly a thousand years after the island was discovered by Gonçalves Zarco.’ Entering this space gives the feeling that you are entering a ship of ‘Star Wars’. It is in fact extremely well done in terms of scenery." Website: parquetematicodamadeira

Today’s news headlines from the front page of the Diário de Notícias :

Magazines disturb the family of Carlos. This is about Carlos Costa, the contestant from Porto Moniz in the Portuguese Pop Idol competition. His family say that some of the stuff being said about him is just not true.

And while we are on the subject of entertainment, the Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias has its premier of the long awaited showing of ‘The Lesbian Vampires of Sodom’. 9.30 tonight and tomorrow night (tickets €20), and the last performance is on Sunday at 6 pm (€18). The mind boggles!

Today’s main news headline : Regional Government sustains a new guarantee of €7 million – Who benefits now from the fatherly approach of the government, that pledges government money, are now the banana cooperatives. Little notice is taken of the warnings by the Court of Auditors to the dangers of the [financial] guarantees.

Madeira wins Russian tourism.

SATA confirms Algarve in the Summer.

Portugal’s Minister for Finance acknowledges tax increases – If Parliament approves proposals for the changes to the Regional Finance Law, Finance Minister [Teixeira dos Santos] cannot see any alternative to reduce the deficit. Santos said yesterday that approval of the changes, that will result in extra money being allocated to Madeira, will need to be covered by tax increases, or will signal the end of the Special Payment on Account scheme (PEC). He then clarifies that if "some of the proposals on the table" go forward, that will be the situation, so it’s won’t be just on account of Madeira if taxes increase. He was responding to a question from a journalist who asked him if a tax rise could be totally ruled out.

World in state of shock seeks to help Haiti – Nations and international organisations combine efforts to send assistance to a decimated country. Portugal is in the territory, and Madeira is collecting money to help. That story also provides the main front page photo again.

Extractions in need of a study – The lorries continue to take away inerts [sand, stone, etc.] in Ribeira do Faial. The Regional Government says that there is a permit. But the geologist João Baptista warns : "Mother nature responds to the mistakes of man". [John the Baptist] reckons that nature will be back to rebalance the damage caused by the human extractions, "this is one of the great laws of nature" he says. His warning comes just a few days after massive amounts of mud and inert material were shifted along Madeira’s water courses.  He says that the issue is more complex than anybody can imagine, and could not be explained in a short conversation. I for one believe him, and I certainly can’t imagine that the extraction company(s) have carried out impact analyses of the damage they are doing and the long term dangers that are posed. Of course these ‘inerts’ are used in the construction industry, and who are the main beneficiaries of the profits I wonder? Couldn’t be the politicians who granted the permit surely? I noticed a couple of comments a few days ago along the lines of what harm could dumping thousands of tons of mud and debris into the sea do. I bit my tongue, thinking it was just a wind up, but as J the B says you upset the balance of nature on such a huge scale, it will have consequences, whether on land or at sea.

The main sport / football headline today : Only the rain threatens the turf at Barreiros – The maintenance company guarantees the ground is in good condition for the Marítimo – Benfica game, on Sunday. Marítimo will take on Benfica at 8.15 pm, and it’s on SportTV1.

Nacional play away at Sporting in a super-duper football weekend for Madeira. You can watch this game on RTP tomorrow night at 9.15 pm on RTP.

If anyone else can oblige with the translation of any of the ‘blank’ or sparsely filled headlines, or other news stories, here is the link. All contributions much appreciated, but there will have to be a cut off time of 9 pm today.

Farmers ready to claim support ; Fewer ships but more tourists ; New firework record at stake

December 31, 2009 By: admin Category: Madeira & General News, Reader Chat & Questions

Today’s photo – Many thanks to Elaine (West) … municipal gardens, Funchal

madeira news blog 0912 elaine west municipal gardens funchal

"Sunway are delighted to introduce the breathtaking island of Madeira. This wonderful island has so much to offer from many historical monuments, squares and streets in the capital of Funchal to enchanting gardens, picturesque villages and amazing landscapes". MADEIRA HOLIDAYS FROM IRELAND

Apparently this website is also showing the Funchal 2010 fireworks live on the internet tonight, but it may well be linked back to the website link that I gave you a couple of days ago NEW YEAR 2010 FIREWORKS MADEIRA

Lets hope the weather stays good for tonight’s celebrations, and that a new firework world record is secured for Madeira.

Many thanks to Elaine once again for yesterday’s top news stories :

39 farmers have already signed up. Many more are expected to follow. On the first day after the Government announced financial assistance for storm damage, 39 farmers have registered. There is no time limit for applying, or limit to the amount of funds applied for. 18 farmers were from Funchal, 11 from São Vicente, 5 from Santana, 3 from Ponta do Sol and 2 from Calheta. Teams of experts are to survey the damage and monitor risk areas; Sao Vicente Council has already set one up.

Sea damages areas at Praia Formosa. The promenade between Praia Formosa and Doca do Cavacas has been closed due to bad weather. Bars have been partially destroyed, small pebbles washed onto the promenade, and the swimming pools at Barreirinha, Doca do Cavacas and Lido lashed by 3.5 – 4.5 metre waves. The bar Barra Azul has had further damage, the Docas Cafe was also badly affected and the Yacht Bar has lost its rock staircase. The administrator of the Frente Mar Funchal says losses are huge and will estimate the cost after the end of the year, when he expects an improvement in the weather.

Danger in the Tres Paus. Part of the Caminho dos Tres Paus in Santo Antonio collapsed last weekend. Funchal Council erected security barriers but the residents continue to use the road. They want a protective wall constructed, especially after two men died last year after a car skidded in that area.

Large rock hits a home and threatens others. A large rock fell onto a residence located at Travessa do Ribeira Canavial in São Roque. It was part of a landslide which occurred at 23.30 last Monday. Officials have surveyed the damage but the Council say they are not responsible for clearing the escarpment and will notify the owner of the land to undertake this work.

Court of Auditors censures IHM construction in Figueirinhas.  The Court says the IHM (Housing Investment of Madeira – social housing) should respect the Code of Public Contracts. 50 residential units were built in Figueirinhas in Funchal through a contract between the IHM and the company Soconstroi. The contract was for 2.838.179,34 Euros but the final cost was 3.215.022,09 Euros. The units were completed in 1998 but the contract was not sent for approval until 2000. After an additional contract, which caused the increase in the cost, the work was finally approved six years after the expiration of the five year guarantee.

Fewer ships, more tourists. Table of the number of cruise ships and passengers visiting for the New Year’s Eve fireworks display, since 1962 (shown below)In 2007, there were the most cruise ship passengers (13,156 from 12 ships). There might be problems ferrying more than 3,000 passengers from the two ships berthed offshore this year, due to forecasts of bad weather. The Queen Victoria has a 24-hour delay and hopes to anchor offshore at 7 am tomorrow. For the third day running, the ferry could not sail for Porto Santo.

TOP 10 of the Port of Funchal on 31 December
Year – Ships – Tourists
1962 – 10-5440
1964 – 10-5800
1968 – 13-6892
1969 – 12-6400
1974 – 9-5077
2001 – 9-7935
2002 – 10-9539
2005 – 11-8670
2007 – 12 – 13.156
2008 – 8 – 7.200

* Many fail to buy tickets until the last minute – Getting ready for New Year’s Eve. From the Jornal da Madeira. On the eve of another End-of-the-Year night, there are many offerings for the night of reveillon, shown by the various advertisements that already appear in the pages of newspapers. Prices vary depending on the economic possibilities of each and depending on what they want. In general, there are already many tickets sold for the festival of the passing of the year. However, the contacts we made told us that most people leave it until the last minute to buy the entrance tickets. A fact that, as we mentioned, not only has to do with "the habit of doing things at the last minute" but above all due to indecision. Because as we explained, "as a couple it is easier to decide", which is not true of groups. Although again, as we mentioned, there are also groups that prefer to buy the tickets on time to avoid some of the members being left out. As for the animation, there is also a bit of everything and for all tastes. From dance music with renowned DJs, to live music through performances by musical groups. In general and in relation to the hotels, we found attempts to present a special program for guests, but also for the many Madeirans who choose to enter the New Year in hotels. But the party is not only in hotels, clubs or other places that usually open the doors to mark New Year’s Eve. For the last night of this year, there is also a show provided by the Association of the Light Orchestra of Madeira, which will take place between 21.00 and 04.00 in the Municipal Garden of Funchal. Before the fireworks, in downtown Funchal between 10.00 and 20.00, there will be performances by brass bands and folklore groups. In the Central Square next to the Cathedral of Funchal, the Children’s Choir of the Office of the Coordinator of Arts Education will perform between 18.30 and 19.20. Also in the area of Avenida Arriaga, but in the garden situated to the north of the Palacio de Sao Lourenco, the Ensemble of Accordions of the Office of the Coordinator of Arts Education is also expected to perform between 11.00 and 11.50. I saw in last nights Diário that the Casino has a special do with dinner tonight. For a bargain €180 a head one can feast and then frolic … how the other half lives eh! Der

Today’s news headlines from the front page of the Diário de Notícias :

What changed and what awaits us – 56 pages. Looks like the good people from the Diário have produced a bumper year end supplement with today’s newspaper. If I see an online edition I will provide a link to it, but no sign of it yet.

Danger of collapse in the valley [of the Nuns] – Bad weather caused openings in the road and lands. There are fear of a landslide in Curral das Freiras, into the river, after significant cracks appeared in the road (ER 107) and nearby land. The cracks have been getting bigger since the beginning of the week. MORE PHOTOS The danger area is between the centre of Curral das Freiras and sítio do Colmeal. Residents are very concerned that the rockfall could be considerable. The first cracks appeared on Monday in the tarmac, soon after the tunnel exit, and are growing in size. Cracks in the nearby land, just below the road, have also appeared, in land belonging to the Levada Commission. Huge quantities of earth have been deposited there over the years with the story being that there would be cultivation and forest planting. The president of the Câmara Municipal of Câmara de Lobos, Arlindo Gomes, says that the earth deposited actually supports what is above, and that from what he knows "the situation is under control". With your track record in misleading the public Sr. Gomes, I think I would be off from there like a shot if I was unfortunate enough to live in the area at risk!

Today’s main news headline : Jorge Romeira calls-off the work plan of Humberto – The sea front zone of São Vicente, that was one of the flagship projects of ex-president Humberto Vasconcelos, doesn’t have conditions to move forward, according to the new council president Jorge Romeira, who will also do in his own style administrative restructuring. The project goes to the ‘Greek calendar’ [indefinitely], with no possibility of starting in the next few years. Romeira also intends to do some ‘housekeeping’ to organise his empire in his own style. The sea front redevelopment has now been dropped from the council programme, due to lack of funding, even more so now due to the damage caused by the abnormal rain fall in recent weeks, and the resulting need for priority expenditure. Don’t councils have insurance policies here? That will come as a bit of a shock to the locals I would imagine, as that was a much needed project for trade and to generally improve the visual aspect of the area. I wonder if that was mentioned in the small print of the PSD Social Democrat Party election manifesto a  few months back?

100 police in the streets to guarantee safety later tonight – ‘Operation Fim do Ano’ [year end] runs on the night when 39 firework posts will light the night sky. Here you can see a list of the ideal places to watch the fireworks.

The most profitable in the world expected today on Madeira. With a portrait photo of a thoughtful looking Cristiano Ronaldo, who may of lost the title of the world best footballer, but has now taken David Beckham’s crown as top money-spinner in the game. The Madeiran revealed yesterday in an interview with a Spanish sports newspaper his desire to "regain the Golden Ball" and his ambition to be "the best player in history." "Thank God I have already won the trophy once for best player in the world, but I hope to win it back again. This year or next I will come back to win the Golden Ball," said Ronaldo, who fills the front page of the Marca newspaper. In a revealing interview he confessed his admiration for the Spanish actress Penélope Cruz, and his ignorance of the main places of night time entertainment in Madrid. He doesn’t like bullfighting either. The newspaper said that Ronaldo, now 24, could generate up to €80 million a year in advertising revenue, dethroning David Beckham as the adverting idiot icon in the world of football.

Cabo Girao viewpoint redevelopment ; Security guards to watch Funchal, Fashionable Madeira

December 14, 2009 By: admin Category: Madeira & General News, Reader Chat & Questions

Today’s Photo Thanks to  Derek … Jardim do Mar coast

madeira news blog 0911 derek Jardim do Mar Coast A CRUISE PASSENGER’S ASSESSMENT (Prinsendam cruise in November 2009) : "Madeira (Funchal) – Our last stop before the transatlantic journey, this lush island is such a paradise … I was there at the end of November and the sun was shining, many flowers in bloom and everything was just so green. I did the hop on/hop off here too – be sure to get off and wander. This was my favorite port – the sloping mountainside covered in red roofed homes was quite a sight as I made my way up in the cable car … another activity everyone must try. It’s all just so picturesque. I didn’t try the Madeira wine – mistake! The food was good – lovely soft local cheese blended with al dente pasta, a small salad, chocolate mousse pie and wine for only 10 Euro. I also bought a bottle of local port and a nice big bag of local sea salt to take home to friends – such a nice touch. jmk171′s Rating: 5+". Never heard of anyone taking sea salt as a present for friends … won’t break the bank, that’s for sure.

"They originated as purely experimental devices, but small satellites are now taking on a growing number of operational roles alongside their full-sized counterparts. A conference next year will discuss how the evolution of small satellites is spurring a radical increase in data availability and knowledge-based services. The event is the latest in a series covering Small Satellite Systems and Services – the 4S Symposium. Taking place every two years, the 4S Symposium has enjoyed progressively greater international participation since it began in 1992, with 25 nations represented at the 2008 event in Rhodes, Greece. The next 4S Symposium will take place from 31 May to 4 June on the Portuguese island of Madeira". FASCINATING STUFF … WHERE IS THE PLAIN ENGLISH VERSION?

Portugal’s capital city, Lisbon, has, according to the findings of an international study published this week, surpassed London on the ‘World’s Most Expensive Cities’ list regarding the purchasing of common goods, like food. Based on the differences between prices of goods as simple as milk, a coffee or a hamburger, it has been established that all of the afore-mentioned and many other consumables are now more expensive to buy in Lisbon than in London. A study by international price-comparing company PriceRunner International has ranked Lisbon as the 14th most expensive capital city in the world, one place above London, which this year fell one position from 14th to 15th. Many thanks to Elaine once again for yesterday’s top news stories :

Paid night watchmen in Funchal. Funchal Council presented last week a proposal for licensing the legal activity of night watchmen in the city of Funchal. The intention is that from 2010, they can be paid by voluntary contributions from people in areas where they will be working. This activity will start in the city centre and later extended to other areas where their intervention is needed. The night guards will be a link between the population and the PSP. Regulation will allow direct action in areas for trade and tourism and in residential areas. Candidates need to be Portuguese, between the ages of 21 and 65, have compulsory education, be very fit and hold no administrative post. To prevent confusion between their work and the police, the role of the night watchman is to patrol and conduct surveillance in the area for the protection of people and goods. They cannot use a weapon but later may be licensed to use dogs. They will wear a uniform and the only financial support from the Council will be for their training.

Cabo Girão redevelopment. The present redevelopment of the viewpoint at Cabo Girão should take a year and a half to complete (first quarter of 2011), costing over 2 million Euros. There will be a glass floor suspended over the cliff and the entire area renovated to enhance the panoramic view. Until then, there will be limited access, both on foot and by car, especially for the next six months. There will be new pedestrian and vehicle access, landscaping, a tourist information centre, exhibition centre, cafeteria, shops and toilets. The viewpoint itself will extend over the cliff, by a steel structure with a glass floor that accentuates the feeling of height above the sea (580 metres). The cafe will have a terrace suspended above the ravine, where you can enjoy the spectacular scenery that attracts many tourists to one of the finest views of Madeira.

The man who was driving a truck carrying pine wood, placed the truck across the road to block the path of the taxi which had a client inside. The taxi driver was pulled from the car and shaken by the neck and threatened several times. Several motorists and residents witnessed the incident in São Matinho, near Edificio Varzea Park. After the scene, the assailant left the area and the taxi driver whose shirt was completely torn, also left. The police later intercepted and detained the van driver and a machete was found inside but no gun.

More companies cancel Christmas gatherings. Restaurants show a 30 – 40% loss in demand since 2008. Due to the credit crisis, many companies are suspending traditional Christmas gatherings. Interview with Jose Brito, the manager of A Lareira in Caniço. In the first quarter of the year there was a drop in tourism, numbers increasing during the summer months but a decrease in customers again since then. Their main business is at the weekend and this Christmas is also looking poor, so far 30% less bookings than last year. Restaurants are traditionally visited at the end of Midnight Mass when families go for soup or hot chocolate. In Machico, the restaurant Escondidinho has 40% less bookings for Christmas lunch and dinner. The Council of Machico has cancelled its reservation there. To try to attract customers, the As Vides in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos is offering a digestive aguardente and the possibility of using a photography service on festival days upon payment for photos. The owner said, "In times of crisis, it’s time to innovate".

PSP pay the bill of the Finance Law. The Regional Command of the PSP is the only one in the country without funding because only in Madeira, the fines levied contribute to the Regional Budget. This limits the operation of the PSP. The Regional and Republic Governments have not decided on who takes the initiative for funding: the Ministry of Internal Affairs or the holder of the source of revenue from fines (Executive of Madeira). The PSP has paid the bill for litigation between the State and the Autonomy, since the Law of Regional Finance was announced with a cut in funds for Madeira. In Ponta do Sol, the Council has financed repairs to the dilapidated local police station and a new one is urgently required. New stations are required in other areas and new police vehicles are also needed.

Offended trader receives compensation. Four individuals who were aggressive towards a trader in Banda d’Alem in Machico three years ago, have been ordered by the Court to pay compensation. They were verbally and physically assaultive against the 53 year old haberdashery owner. The shop owner asked a woman driver not to park on a yellow line outside his premises as it was causing damage to his business. The four from the same family heard later on about the incident and thought he had used insulting terms and entered the shop for an explanation. A conflict occurred and local residents had to assist the shop owner and the police arrived. The aggressors had threatened to "take justice into their own hands" and said the proprietor failed to have the same view for every vehicle that stopped outside his shop, especially when it belonged to a relative. The trader is relieved they have been found guilty, as he has found it psychologically difficult when coming across these four in the street and his 15 year old son refused to attend the school in Funchal where one of the aggressors taught, (two of the four were teachers). The money will be donated to an institution which helps victims of domestic abuse.

Today’s news headlines from the front page of the Diário de Notícias. Lots of them today! Far too many for one person to manage …

Fishing with losses of €2 million – The earnings and the catches register further decreases in the third quarter. The losses compared to last year have already reached €1.95 million according the the latest report form the National Institute of Statistics. The first 9 months of 2009 have seen revenues fall to €11.9 million. The drop in revenues is partly due to the  reduction in the Madeira catch, with September this year for example registering a 29% lower catch than in 2008. In the first 9 months of this year 957 thousand less kilos of fish have been landed. Tuna fish have been the exception, with 142 more tons caught so far this year.

Today’s main news headline : Debt is going to duplicate – Loans and other means increase by 125% the direct debt of Madeira that, at the end of 2010 will surpass the thousand million Euros. There is a shortage of funds to meet the budget for 2010, and tomorrow the ‘chancellor’ Ventura Garcês has to explain how the government will cope with the situation, the most difficult in recent years. Pregnancy terminations increase 46% in the Region – Single women, aged from 20 to 29, are the group with the most abortions. In the first 10 months of this year there were 210 voluntary pregnancies terminations, compared to 174 in the whole of 2008. Data collected since the new abortion law came into force on 1st January 2008 shows that 58% of the women are single, 36% are married, and 6% were divorced. 40% of the total are aged between 20 and 29, 6% are aged 40 to 49, and 20% are less than 20. There are increasing numbers of students with scholarships. 1,470 young people receive government support for their further education, and €250,000 has already been spent on support. In the 2008 / 2009 academic year the number of such students was 1,372, and number that has already been exceeded in the current academic year, with a few more already waiting to be added to the list. One reason for the increase is the "global crisis that affects all families and that causes more students to seek this kind of support", says João Costa e Silva, Director of the Office of Education. Those students who study outside of Madeira receive monthly support of €170, and that amount also applies to those students from Porto Santo who come to Madeira for higher education. The total monthly cost to the Madeira government will work out at around €250,000.

Marítimo lose the game and fifth place – Rio Ave effectively impose the first defeat of Mitchel. Today’s rather pointless main front page photo shows some players milling around on the pitch. Marítimo missed a chance to go 4th in the league, and climb above Nacional who lost on Friday night. They lost 0 – 1 at home to Rio Ave yesterday afternoon, the first [league?] defeat under new manager Mitchel van der Gaag.

Jokanovic takes charge of coaching of Nacional.

If anyone else can oblige with the translation of any of the ‘blank’ or sparsely filled headlines, or other news stories, here is the linkThank you in anticipation.

Elaine has very kindly sent in a second contribution today: "Jornal da Madeira is having a series of articles on Madeiran Christmas traditions".

CHRISTMAS 2009 – The tradition of Christmas with the taste of honey – HONEY CAKE

Appeared in the heyday of sugar production in Madeira, honey cake, and through the centuries until today, remains as a symbol of Madeiran cuisine. The tradition dictates that this cake is prepared on December 8, Feast of the Immaculate Conception, which marks the beginning of Christmas in our region.

Although the honey cake is baked in industrial moulds to meet the demands of the business, there are still many people who prefer to do it at home, as with Rita Freitas who from a young age became accustomed to this art that has its secrets, because as she stated "there are many recipes for honey cake and each one has a special feature. What causes it to be tasty and look great are the amount of products that arise and the cooking time."

To make a honey cake at home is a task that requires much effort. It starts the day before the day to prepare the cake, when you buy the bread dough at the bakery in preparation for the baking at home. After a day of "rest" the dough is ready to receive the condiments, warm honey, grated orange or lemon, spices, almonds, walnuts, Cidrão and Madeira wine. Kneading is also a demanding job, as Rita Freitas said, emphasizing that "the person must have some strength in order to be a long time leaning over the bowl to knead, as tradition, but now there are machines that make this service quicker, but never as they did it before. Before then, It seems that the cake was better. But it is with joy knowing that then we will have a honey cake that will please many people."

The next step may be effected only three or four days after mixing, since in this work "we have to cover the dough with a cloth or blanket and let it rise in a warm place at a constant temperature. Then divide the dough into portions of 250, 500 or 750 grams depending on the size of the cakes. Put these portions of dough into round shapes, low and level and well oiled and take to bake in a hot oven, after having decorated the surface with half walnuts or almonds or pieces of Cidrão." When finished, honey cake is ready to be served at home visits of family and friends, or typical gatherings particularly those that are after the Mass do Parto. A lament of our speaker is that "the younger generation is no longer interested in making honey cake at home and thus this tradition will be lost. I still remember the time when in all the houses honey cakes were made and the joy that lived with so many people to help in making this cake. So then it seemed that Christmas was more joyful. But while I can I will continue to make homemade honey cake, not only to maintain the tradition but also that many can enjoy a real Madeiran treat."
