600th-anniversary celebrations of the Discovery of Madeira and Porto Santo
The Diario reports that the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will come to the archipelago on 27 March next year, to participate in the 600th-anniversary celebrations of the Discovery of Madeira and Porto Santo.
This was one of the decisions that came out of the meeting that the President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, held yesterday afternoon, with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in the Belém Palace, in Lisbon.
On 27 March, the President of the Republic will participate in various events related to the 600th anniversary of Madeira, in a program that was agreed between them and which will be announced shortly.
The Madeiran President points out that he considers the meeting with Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to have been very positive, having also addressed, among other matters, various aspects related to the commemorations of the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, which will take place on 10 June 2020 in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. Various aspects of the June 10 commemoration program have already been addressed.
JM reports that the meeting was not covered by the media. Yesterday morning, in its print edition, it described the meeting as a ‘pacifying’ hearing following Albuquerque’s criticism at the last Social Democratic Congress, this being the first time Albuquerque has been received by the Head of State as leader of a coalition government.
