More than one million light bulbs illuminated
JM report that more than one million lights came on last night in Funchal, starting the Christmas and New Year festivities in Madeira, lasting until January 6th. There was no “official” opening this year, but thousands of residents and tourists were attracted to downtown Funchal to witness the Christmas lights.
“We already feel the festive atmosphere in the centre of Funchal,” said the Regional Director of Tourism, Dorita Mendonça. “Everything is going smoothly,” she added, adding that until January 6 there will be a lot of excitement in Funchal’s city centre. The Director reserved releasing the official occupancy rates until a press conference that the Regional Secretariat for Tourism and Culture will hold later.
Parallel to the inauguration of the Christmas lighting, there was also the opening of the 20 food stalls and regional articles of the “Christmas Market” on the Placa Central, which this year was involved in controversy, when Regional and Funchal authorities fell out in public.
