Leading economist thinks tourist tax will apply soon
The JM website reports today that the President of the Madeira Delegation of the Order of Economists, Paulo Pereira, thinks that a universal tourist tax in the whole region is inevitable. At the moment it is only applied in the Santa Cruz area, between the airport and Funchal.
“Sooner or later it will be inevitable to apply the tourist tax in the Region. It cannot be selfish or political. It will have to be a homogeneous tax with revenue to be delivered to an independent entity to be applied in valuing the tourism promotion of the region ” Madeira” he said at the opening ceremony of the XIII Annual Tourism Conference being held in Funchal.
In his reply, Pedro Calado, the Vice-President of the Regional Government, thanked the “challenge he launched us”, ensuring “to be sure that together we will find the best financing solution for the promotion of Madeira”.
