Saga first-ever new build arrives in Funchal
The Saga Cruises ‘Spirit of Discovery’ ship debuted this morning in the port of Funchal. Thanks to Jaime for the info – pointing out that this is Saga’s first-ever new-build, reportedly having cost £346 million.
JM reports that with a capacity of 999 passengers and 523 crew, the luxury vessel arrives in the Region “still smelling of fresh paint”, as it made its maiden voyage on July 10th.
The “Spirit of Discovery” was built for the British market, featuring London-style hotel speciality restaurants with an Art Deco-influenced Lido area.
Onboard are 400 original works commissioned by British artists and craftsmen, including the bronze relief that covers three floors of the atrium featuring scenes from the British Isles, including the Saga Cruises headquarters in Folkestone.
The onboard luxuries include a sumptuous 400-seat theatre, a seafood restaurant, spacious booths, all fitted with a balcony, and many others.
