Ponta do Sol hosts Sky Running

‘ADN Race’ next weekend

The Diario reports that the municipality of Ponta do Sol will receive, next Sunday, November 10, the Sky Running ‘ADN Race’, for the 4th consecutive year.

This sporting event is organized by Associação de Desportos da Natureza Ponta do Sol and has the support of the Municipality of Ponta do Sol, as well as the Parish Councils of Ponta do Sol, Canhas and Madalena do Mar.

This competition, described on the website as “a sporting challenge between the sea and the mountains of Ponta do Sol in harmony with nature” is part of the Portuguese Cup of Sky and the Madeira Cup of Sky, organized by the Portuguese Camping and Mountaineering Federation.

The event has three races: Sky Race (32km and 2300 positive level), Mini Sky Race (13km and 800 positive level) and Walking (10 km and 100 positive level). As the name implies the third race is more of a walk, rather than sky running, departing at 11:00 at the beginning of Levada Nova Ponta do Sol, at the Lombada site. The walk will go through the new levada to its mother and then back on the levada do Moinho to Solar dos Esmeraldos. From here you will follow some paths until the final descent through the Santo Amaro site with the goal located in the centre of Ponta do Sol village. It is limited to 50 entries.

Between the three races will be present about 300 athletes and 50 volunteers.
