EU counterparts impressed with latest Portuguese figures
The Diario reports that the President of the Republic said yesterday that he received congratulations from other heads of state of the European Union (EU) on the path of Portugal’s finances, on the day that forecasts were published pointing to a budget surplus this year.
“I have had here, upon arrival in Athens, and I will certainly have between today [Thursday] and tomorrow [Friday], reactions from my peers, heads of state from other [EU] countries, who congratulated me on Portugal, ”said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa speaking to journalists in the Greek capital, the city where he travelled to participate in the 15th meeting of the Arraiolos Group of European Presidents.
Referring to the forecasts of the Public Finance Council released yesterday, which indicate that this year Portugal will no longer have a deficit, forecasting a budget surplus of 0.1%, as well as a 1.9% growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The head of state noted that such congratulations were made “with the conviction that, in fact, the budgetary path [by Portugal] could, this year and in the near future, yield better results than were foreseen”.
“I received these compliments,” Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said, at the entrance to a dinner hosted by Greek President Prokopios Pavlopoulos to EU heads of state at the Acropolis Museum. He recently announced that his decision to re-apply for the Presidency of the Republic depended on the results of an upcoming medical examination.
