Praia Formosa tunnel. Sunny start to week.

Praia Formosa tunnel remains closed

Steps down to tunnel at Praia FormosaThanks to Mike for letting the blog know that tunnel through the caves linking Doca do Cavacas to Praia Formosa remains closed. However there is no longer any warning of this at the top of the steps leading down from Centromar (pictured), so unless you are heavily into fitness you can save yourself a long walk down and back before you find out! The sign announcing the closure is only at the bottom.
If somebody can let me know when it reopens I will put a note here – the seafront walk along this stretch is very popular, particularly with summer apparently setting in.

The Diario website reports on the weather forecast, which anticipates a sunny start to the week. There will, as usual, be more chance of cloud in the north of the island. The temperatures will vary between 19ºC and 24ºC according to the Portuguese Weather Institute, with little wind and calm seas.

    • The tunnel is closed most winters because high seas breach the tunnel making it dangerous, a new walk was constructed across the beach but was seriously damaged in some horrendous storms last winter

I guess you have to find out the location for the ballet performance to come further with the details. Either they perform in the Casino or in the Municipal Theatre. The theatre’s website has an english version, but their callender for December seems to be all empty by today.

  4. I have a photo, taken April last year, showing the storm damage in front of the 2 Pestana hotels. The whole of the beach/walkway from the old “Yacht Bar” to the tunnel is washed away. I don’t think there will be much hope of the tunnel being re-opened in the near future as there is nothing to step onto from it. I was there again mid April till last Thursday

  5. The tunnel is regularly closed through winter as high seas breach the tunnel and it becomes dangerous. Work is beginning to start in preparation for summer season do it should open soon.

  6. Our favourite January walk along the esplanade from the Lido but understand the difficulty of it being kept open.
It is not too much a struggle though to walk up the hill and along the road to just past the ‘Fallen Angel’ and down the steps to Praia Formosa and Sunday Lunch still tastes as lovely at Barra Azul whichever way we get there

  7. A few weeks ago we did the promenade walk from Câmara de Lobos to Praia Formosa and seeing the tunnel closed ahead had to walk up the steps just before the hotels, quite a climb for us oldies! Is the road up from Praia Formosa less strenuous? Pity Pestana hotel non residents can’t take advantage of the lift access when tunnel closes. We will be in Madeira again in late June so I am hoping the tunnel will have reopened by then!

Yes much easier even, after a long lingering lunch, as it winds round a bit. Also there is a number one local bus stop just before you reach the top if necessary
