1st phase complete by end of March
Funchal Noticias report that the first phase of the reconstruction of Rua Imperatriz Dona Amélia, at the bottom side of the new Savoy hotel will be completed by the end of this month.
This is stretch between Largo António Nobre and Rua da Penha de França (effectively from the Carlton hotel at the top to the Moynihans and the Prince Albert pubs further down). Apparently, as soon as this complete, the next section towards Funchal city centre will see further work. This will entail more traffic diversions in the area around the two pubs. There is then a third phase planned.
The contract was awarded at a cost of €620,000 and involves not only re-laying the road with cobbles, but significant work on the mains services underneath it, which have been notoriously unreliable in that area – and will be further stretched with the opening of the New Savoy. Work started at the end of January, and was originally planned to last 4-5 months, so matters have progressed quickly, despite the foundations being laid and then having to be dug up again on several occasions.
