Funchal roads. Two assaulted.

Ten roads to be improved this summer

The Journal leads with the story that ten roads will be resurfaced in Funchal this summer. Apparently in the last three years alone the local authority, Câmara do Funchal, have invested one and a half million euros to improve roads in poor condition.
In the story that makes headlines in this Monday’s edition, the vice-president of the Câmara reveals to the newspaper that “the authority are paying for the works done in a hurry” and insists that Funchal continues to be discriminated against by the Regional Government compared to other municipalities.

Two assaulted

Rather worryingly, the Diario reports online that Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters yesterday attended to two people who were victims of aggression in Funchal. The first was a 41-year-old woman who was assaulted on Rua do Aljube, near the Cathedral, shortly before six o’clock in the morning. Later in the afternoon the same organisation was called to access the Modelo supermarket at Viveiros to attend a 22-year-old man who had been a victim of aggression.

  1. This is sad to hear, I’ve always felt very safe in Funchal and Porto Santo, don’t let Madeira become like the crime ridden UK, where stabbings, assaults, burglary and murder seem to happen daily, crack down hard on criminals and make harsh punishments a deterrent, increase your police force and deport anybody instantly who comes from elsewhere and commits crimes.
Sadly the UK has done the opposite for the last 20 years and we are reaping their failures. 😟
