Minister announces optical site
The data centre for monitoring objects in space, based in Terceira island in the Azores, and integrated in the national centre of SST (Space Surveillance Tracking) operations, is expected to start activity in June, according to the Azorean executive.
“Terinov is scheduled to start operating, with companies already in place, starting in April. On the other hand, from June we have the estimate of having the SST, which is a more spatial program, “said the Azorean Regional Secretary for the Sea, Science and Technology of the Azores, Gui Menezes.
The official spoke in Angra do Heroísmo to the journalists, on the sidelines of a visit to the Science and Technology Park of Terceira Island, Terinov, attended by Portuguese Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor.
Portugal is part of a European consortium created in 2014 to ensure the monitoring of the European area. In the Azores, in addition to the data centre, which will be located on Terceira Island, a radar site is planned for the island of Flores, while in the Madeira archipelago, in Pico do Areeiro, another optical site is planned.
