Athletes from 36 different counties registered
The Diario reports that this year’s Santander Totta Funchal Marathon takes to the streets on January 20th. Policarpo Gouveia, president of the Athletics Association of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, said that the registrations are proceeding at a good pace, with athletes from 36 countries already registered for the event. But many more are needed to make this year’s marathon the same success as in previous editions – the President of AAARM is appealing for local Madeirans to enter. The Funchal Marathon is the second recent sporting event to bring foreign athletes bring to Madeira, following just weeks after the Funchal City Race.
The event offers 3 different distances; the full length Funchal Marathon with 42,195 metres, the Funchal Half Marathon of 21,097.50 metres, and the Mini Marathon of 5,850 metres.
This year there are new routes. “The courses have been changed to make athletes more comfortable. The departure and arrival of the Marathon are in different locations, with the arrival to be positioned in a bus dock in front of the House of Light, where will be mounted the whole structure of the event. We wanted to take a lot of closed angles for the athletes, which also comes from the suggestions given by the participants over the years.
