Second phase of work in Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas
FN report that this morning the Câmara do Funchal begins the second phase of works in Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas. For now, road traffic will be interrupted at Rua do Ribeirinho de Baixo (south of Rua do Seminário) and at Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas (between Rua do Ribeirinho de Baixo and Rua do Carmo), while maintaining access to the Anadia car park, through Rua do Ribeirinho de Baixo. The diversions in effect are below.
The works associated with Rua Dr. Fernão de Ornelas consists of an architectural project to redevelop the streets, as well as replacing the basic sanitation networks, and translates an investment of €313,000 by the Câmara . The first phase of this rehabilitation project was completed in November 2018, with a stop for the Christmas season. Now, 2019 will bring further changes to one of the busiest streets in the city centre.
Ferdinand Manuel Ornelas Gonçalves was mayor of Funchal from 1935 to 1946 and is closely associated with the modernisation of the city centre. In 1946 he was appointed for another four-year term, but as a result of disagreements with the governor of that time, he was eventually removed from the municipality. After his departure, Fernão de Ornelas left his city and went to live in Lisbon, where he died on May 24, 1978.
