Levada accidents reach record high.

Accidents on Levadas reach 100 so far this year

The print edition of the Journal leads with the story that 2018 has already seen a record number of accidents on Madeira’s levadas and trails.
The reported number of accidents has for the first time reached a hundred cases, four of which were fatal for foreign tourists. The paper points out the obvious, saying that as a rule, occurrences result from “sloppiness, negligence, and (the) poor knowledge of hikers”.

  1. A 1 euro tourist tax would help to pay for rescue team for time and equipment would help. Signs could be placed given clear photos of the right type of foot wear etc. Before going on the walks sign at hotels stating please inform staff and where you going. I leave it for over readers to comment.
