Santa Maria Manuela arrives in Funchal

Santa Maria Manuela arrives in Funchal this morning

Santa Maria ManuelaThe Santa Maria Manuela was last here in April, since when she spent summer competing in the Tall Ships race – Sunderland – Scandinavia – Netherlands.
She is doing two cruises :- Funchal – Porto Moniz- Porto Santo – Desertas – Funchal.   10 – 14 Oct  and 14 – 18 Oct (sold out ) 675 € pp. Dormitory style accommodation in bunk beds! Then off to Cabo Verde returning to Funchal in late November
The website has an interesting history page (she was built specifically for the cod fisheries of Newfoundland and Greenland). In 1966 the Canadian Film Board filmed a documentary “the White Ship” – sombre but poignant footage of life on board in her Bacalhau cod fishing days.
One bit of trivia supplied by our nautical expert – she was launched in 1937 the same year as Spencer Tracy starred as Manuel the Madeiran fisherman in the Hollywood film adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s ‘Captains Courageous’ – the American version of Portuguese cod fishing.
The ship has a dedicated YouTube channel

  1. Beauty and the Beast could have been the caption on the webcam Maurice
As an “old salt” a voyage on her is on my “bucket list” however, when I informed my “first mate” I’d found the perfect mini cruise for us, she promptly informed me that said bucket might be kicked sooner rather than later if I expected her to sleep in bunk beds in dormitory style accommodation lol !!
