Lone sailor rescued
The Diario reports that the Navy yesterday coordinated the rescue of a French-flagged sailboat, whose sole crew member, age 51, was suffering from severe back pain, necessitating medical assistance. The vessel was 8 nautical miles west of Porto Santo.
The alert was received at 05.00am , at the Rescue Centre in Lisbon, and forwarded to Maritime Search and Rescue in Funchal. In view of the clinical situation and proximity to land, it was decided to evacuate by sea. The “Barracuda” vessel, of the Porto Santo Port Authority, and the pilot vessel “Comandante Cristiano de Sousa”, of APRAM, (the port authority in Madeira) were sent to the location. A crew member boarded the ship and evaluated the situation, and in view of the sole crewman’s determination not to abandon the ship it was escorted to the Quinta do Lorde Marina, arriving shortly before 11.00am. The crewman was then transported to the Health Centre in Machico
