Sea lion filmed asleep
Thanks to Peter for alerting me to the unusual footage below of a sea lion or “Lobo Marinho” (after which the Porto Santo ferry and the fishing village of Câmara de Lobos are named). The footage was posted on YouTube by Azul Diving Centre, based at Quinta do Lorde Resort on Ponta de São Lourenço, whose young and enthusiastic owners I had the pleasure of meeting some while ago, They chanced upon the sea-lion sleeping on the sea-bed recently. Apparently sea-lions can hold their breath underwater for 15 minutes, but can manage longer by coming up for air without waking. Also known as monk seals, they are considered on of the rarest marine mammals in the world.
