Madalena do Mar. New easyJet base.

Madalena do Mar tunnel finally opens

Madalena do Mar tunnel openedFunchal Noticias reported yesterday that Miguel Albuquerque, the President of the Regional Government, has finally inaugurated the new tunnel at Madalena do Mar (in a well attended event, judging by their accompanying photo). It appears to have been near completion for some while as previously reported here.
According to a press release the new tunnel claims to have a length of 3,500 metres but is actually comprised of two tunnels, one of 1,910 metres, which has been open to the public since 2011, and the newly opened one, which is 1,535 metres in length. This connection joins the existing road network through three roundabouts, one in the Arco da Calheta and two in Madalena do Mar.
The execution of the work was divided into two phases, with latest phase of the project beginning in the summer of 2016 and costing €12.7m, or about 17% of the total investment in this road infrastructure of €73.8m. The new tunnel will improve connections between Ponta do Sol and Calheta, and reduce the volume of road traffic using the coast road through Madalena do Mar.

easyJet plans new post-Brexit base

Map of easyJet European flightsLow-cost carrier easyJet is planning to establish a new company in Austria as it seeks to protect its business from the impact of Brexit. As the UK prepares to leave the European Union, the Luton-based carrier said it would establish a new airline, EasyJet Europe, based in Vienna.
The airline must have an air operator certificate in an EU member country to allow it to continue flying between member states after Brexit. In a statement earlier, easyJet said its application was “well advanced”. A spokeswoman said “nothing will change” from the perspective of passengers. easyJet added all the staff and planes that would fly for EasyJet Europe were already employed and based in the other 27 EU countries. The company said no jobs would be lost in the UK, but some would be created in Austria.
The parent company – easyJet PLC – will retain its London Stock Exchange listing and its Luton headquarters. The Austria base is necessary as Britain risks losing access to “open skies” arrangements between EU members. Under the deal, which has been in place since 1994, any EU airline has been free to fly between any two points in Europe.

Funchal Jazz Festival

The Funchal Jazz Festival has been underway for a couple of nights and concludes today

Lapas Festival

Paul do MarThe annual Lapas Festival takes place this weekend in the scenic fishing village of Paul do Mar. Don’t know why but there seems to have been little publicity this year. The word “Paul” apparently refers to an elongated zone, which is an accurate description of this parish in the municipality of Calheta. Full program here

Sometimes I wonder at the impact of these tunnels on local business, shaving a minute off the journey time diverts traffic away from a picturesque road with a nice coffe shop and some good restaurants. Will the absence of passing tourist trade have an adverse effect ? Or will the reduced traffic come as a relief ? It would be nice to understand the local viewpoint of the opening of the new tunnel.

Kevin – I agree – one of my favourite restaurants/cafes when going to Calheta is in Madalena. It will suffer enormously. But maybe now is the right time to buy property there?

I think the property prices in Madalena went up a few years ago ,as soon as people knew the tunnel was coming.
