Port of Lisbon strike ends
The strike by the Union of Dockers and operators at the Port of Lisbon which has disrupted supplies by sea to Madeira ended at the weekend as they agreed a new collective labour agreement. This strike started in November, but disagreements between the dockers and Port authorities go back three years, and spokesmen for both parties have declared that they are now the very best of friends.
Companies such as Continente and Pingo Doce, which normally ship the majority of their goods to Madeira by sea from Lisbon, have had to use the northern port of Leixões to send containers to Caniçal. Despite this alternative route Jerónimo Martins Group have acknowledged constraints in the supply of products to its Pingo Doce stores in Madeira, whilst Continent have confirmed that they have seen a restricted supply of products to its supermarkets on the island.
CR7 denied third consecutive Ballon d’Or
As expected Lionel Messi won his 5th Ballon d’Or last night at the FIFA awards ceremony in Zurich last night. Messi took top spot with 41 percent of the vote, ahead of Ronaldo with 28 percent. Neymar, Messi’s teammate at Barcelona, finished in third with just 8 percent.
The Gaurdian reported prior to the event that Ronaldo was expecting to be the bridesmaid again at the World Player of the Year award for 2015: “To be honest I think Messi is going to win this year because this kind of trophy, it depends on votes. You win competitions, you win the Champions League you win the league in terms of individual. I did probably the best season of my career which is good and I was the highest scorer in Europe [but] it’s all about votes. It is difficult and to be honest I am not very worried about that because as I said many times, I never thought I would win three times”.
It will be the fourth time the Madeiran has been runner-up to Messi, who with Neymar helped Barca win the Primera Division, Copa del Rey and Champions League treble in 2015, plus the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup. Interestingly neither Messi or Ronaldo included each other when voting for their top three players.
By co-incidence, the Diario reports that Ronaldo’s monument in Avenida Francisco Sá Carneiro was vandalised last night, being painted in the colours of Barcelona and having the number 10 and the name Messi added.
