Fireworks. Best destination. Hotel strike.

Fireworks coverage

imageIf you are not able to attend the fireworks tonight, RTP Madeira and RTP International are covering the last day of the year with a special broadcast from the Praça do Povo in Funchal centre between 10:00 and 13:00,14:00 and 18:00 and finally the fireworks display from 22:00 to 00:30. There is also a live video stream planned by Wind Birds on You Tube (videos of previous New Years fireworks displays can be seen on the same link):
Details of this years fireworks display, which will be a little different than usual, were published on the blog at the end on November (link on photo above). Ten cruise ships plan to be in attendance – I have watched the first few arrive and take up position early this morning whilst writing this.

Best destination

imageEuropean Best Destinations, a travel organization based in Brussels and aimed at promoting culture and tourism in Europe in partnership with participating tourism offices, has voted Madeira to be the best destination in Europe to spend New Year’s Eve

Hotel strike fails

A strike by hotel staff that was planned to have started yesterday and last until tomorrow has run out of steam according to press agency Lusa as well as the Diario. Most of the major hotels have reported little or no impact as a result of the action by the Madeira Hotel Workers’ Union.

Blog

blog_iconIt has been another successful year for the blog, with visitor numbers approaching 1250 daily – which isn’t bad for a small island! Inward links and sponsors have also continued to increase. Whilst the blog is generally being posted twice weekly, the amount and quality of content has increased, whilst the social media side has been developed considerably, reinforcing its position as one of the islands most popular integrated sites. Most importantly, the number of “Comments” from readers has continued to grow – thank you all for your contributions! Wishing you all the best for 2015.

  1. In madeira for my 10th new year and have loved the fireworks every year. But it was strange today being in the children’s play area and there not being fireworks there. I’m sure they will still look amazing though. Then off to the football stadium for what looks like a fantastic party to start the year

  2. Best wishes for the New Year everybody. Bit chilly tonight, but fairly clear, so could be a good night for the fireworks. This blog is important to the island – keep up the good work.

  3. Many thanks for all the excellent & helpful News updates. Such a pleasure to be able to keep up to date & enjoy such a variety of interesting information & current events. Every success in 2015.

  4. A belated but heartfelt Happy New year to all contributors and readers of this main point of interest for Madeira

Less than a fortnight till our annual visit and can’t wait

    David

  5. Thanks Jon & Debs –
I guess you remembered my interest in the Santa Cruz festival.
With those dates we may even be able to get in both the first and last days which will be a bonus
