Atlantis hotel. AJJ anniversary. Ronaldo. Funchal seafront latest photos.

I was alerted to some great footage of the the old Atlantis hotel at the end of the airport runway and its demolition in March 2000. It was actually part of a complex was built between 1970 and 1972 and included a hotel, holiday apartments, English bar and games room, a shopping centre with cinema, bowling alley and an Olympic swimming pool with a restaurant overlooking the pool. Interesting to see that there are some online booking websites offering to reserve you accommodation there! I think you can still see the old diving boards from the road at Água de Pena.

Another video on YouTube covering the event includes some excellent footage of the runway extension being built in the same year:

Jardim – 36 years in power

Monday saw the 36th anniversary of Alberto João Cardoso Gonçalves Jardim. Wikipedia somewhat understates the reality:

A controversial personality, Jardim is usually seen as an outspoken populist, who is infamous for his often outspoken remarks about his political opponents, from left to right, including several journalists. He has been compared to politicians like Jean Marie Le Pen and Hugo Chávez”.

Ronaldo form continues

Cries of rage: MarcaThe only other well known Madeiran was in action again last night and kept up his amazing run, scoring twice in Real Madrisd’ 9 – 2 aggregate thrashing of Schalke. This puts him level with the legendary Ferenc Puskas on 242 goals for the Spanish giants. In an interview reported on his team-mate Karim Benzema says he believes Ronaldo is the best footballer of all time

Seafront work in progress

Worth just mentioning a link that has been on the blog a number of times before – this website provides some great up-to-date photos of the various works in progress on the seafront in Funchal (to see earlier photos go to bottom of the page):

Nice stuff on the airport there. I remember the old runway, it was a bit of a white-knuckle landing!

Come on Bertie, isn’t about time you disappeared into history?

On if you go up to the parent sub-forum ‘ilhas’ there are a couple of other threads on private and public funded construction projects on Madeira as well as the Azores. Very interesting.

Does anyone know where to get ordinary plain white vinegar – not the wine or herb varieties. Just the plain stuff for cleaning with. Thanks

I can’t recall having seen spirit vinegar in the stores over there. A peculiarly British item????

We brought over a Karcha for cleaning our windows. There’s quite a few large Patio ones. Best thing we have ever bought.
Our German neighbours had never seen one before, but were so impressed they brought one over.

The cheapest and most effective product for cleaning windows/mirrors is …….Car Screen Wash …..mix up in old squirty bottle spray on, squeege off (old wiper blade or normal cheap window one) wipe off any excess with Kitchen roll …. Job done.
Price for 5l in UK £2.50 lasts approx 8 months.
