Nike ‘WRITE THE FUTURE’ Advert (full version) including Ronaldo on the Simpsons? VIDEO

The Guardian reports: "The ad, which forms the centre-piece of the US sportswear giant’s big budget World Cup marketing campaign across 32 countries, debuted during the Champions League final on ITV1 on Saturday night.

However, viewers in the south of England and Wales missed the climax of the three-minute ad, which tells the story of players including Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo and the fame or failure they experience depending how they perform during a tournament.

Media sources estimate the Champions League advertising slot probably cost Nike somewhere between £350,000 and £500,000.

The final five seconds ends with the global campaign strapline, "Write the Future", and the globally recognised brand property, the Nike "swoosh".Nike debuted the TV ad online ahead of the first television transmission. Link to full article:

Rested and fortified. Penny Watson immerses herself in the proud wine history of this mountainous Portuguese island. Fittingly on an island renowned for its fortified wine, I’m lying in a bath of red wine, the purple liquid making islands of my knees and lapping at my chin like I’m some kind of Greek goddess. True, these grapes – or, more precisely, grape skin and vine-leaf extracts – aren’t the varieties found here on Madeira; they’re pinotage grapes grown in South Africa’s Stellenbosch wine region from where "vinotherapy" hails – but it all ties in rather nicely. Whether you imbibe it or bathe in it, wine is part of the Madeira experience. HERE

Motion doomed to fail. The main opposition Social Democrats, who are negotiating support for the Socialist government’s austerity package, have said they will abstain from a Communist motion of no confidence in parliament later this week. Social Democratic spokesman, Miguel Relvas, announced the stance late on Tuesday saying the party did not want to add a political crisis to the country’s economic plight. That vote has already been and gone … the result thankfully exactly as predicted. Der

Lisbon shortlisted for easyJet base. Lisbon could soon be home to an easyJet base should negotiations provide the right circumstances, after the Portuguese capital was amongst those whittled down to a shortlist from an initial line up of some 70 candidates. Should negotiations be successful, an easyJet base could represent €1.2 billion in revenue over a six-year period, the Lisbon Tourism Board calculated.

‘Straws’ will help promote Madeira. The President of the Regional Government asks mayors to use their imagination to give impetus to local life through new initiatives that do not cost much money. He was visiting the re-qualified typical Santana houses adjacent to the Town Hall which are proof of the creativity, intelligence and innovation of the team led by the mayor Rui Moses. Jardim stressed it is possible to do work that is valued without investing millions. The council has the option of keeping the present use of each house, exhibiting typical aspects and traditions of local Madeiran life: flowers, fruits, food and pastries, embroidery and tourist information. Global marketing and advertising are important and are successful when using regional symbols that remain in people’s memories, represented by the new mascot of Santana called ‘Straws’.

Three foster families for the elderly in 19 years. In 1991, a new scheme was started to allow households to act as foster families for the elderly. For cultural and financial reasons, there have only been three families willing to help someone who is not related to them. The salaries are unappealing, 440 euros per month for caring for an independent elderly person and 672 euros per month for a dependent person. To help the elderly in their own homes, there are 179 carers in the region who receive around 247 euros per month. Most are in Funchal and the rest work in Câmara de Lobos and Calheta.

49 cases of child abuse this year. The phenomenon of child abuse covers all social classes although most cases are detected in lower social class families. Middle and upper class families have a greater ability to cover up child abuse. The number has dropped from 59 for a similar period last year. The most common form of abuse is parental neglect followed by physical abuse, psychological abuse and sexual abuse. Indicators for child abuse are: parental neglect; child under 12 years old; result of unwanted pregnancy; single parent family; domestic violence in the family; socioeconomic and housing problems; financially dependent on the state; family member with alcohol or drug addiction; dysfunctional family; living in social housing and in Funchal or Câmara de Lobos.

35 houses to be demolished.  Funchal Council has started the demolition of 35 houses damaged by the February 20th storm in the high-risk areas of Caminho da Ribeira Grande and Sítio dos Moinhos. One resident is persistently refusing to leave her home of over 50 years. She insists she is used to living in a dangerous area and is not interested in renting a new apartment. The new Lei de Meios streamlines the process of expropriation but every effort is undertaken to act humanely. In high risk areas near water courses, there will be no licences issued for new buildings but the areas could be used for other purposes such as agriculture.

Flower Ball for Madeira and in Madeira in 2011. On Saturday 29th May, the Palácio Estoril Hotel is holding the 10º Baile da Flor to raise funds for non-profit making institutions on the Continent and in Madeira. In 2011, a similar ball will be held in Reid’s Palace Hotel and will also celebrate the 120 years of this hotel. The ball will be held on the eve of the Flower Festival Parade so visitors can come for the weekend and participate in both events. The usual event will still continue in Portugal next year and was started by a group of ladies who hold charity teas. The event in Portugal for 300 includes a dance accompanied by a live orchestra, Madeira Wine and flowers sent from the Tourism Department, at a cost of 120 euros per head. This should provide a lucrative amount for Madeira if well attended. The Duques de Bragança, Regional Secretary for Tourism and the Mayor of Funchal will participate along with other well-known guests and a delegation of ten will travel specially for the occasion from Holland.

Security flaw at the Book Fair. Three pavilions of the Book Fair were burgled early yesterday morning resulting in a thousand euros in losses. A laptop, a recorder and money were stolen. Two stands from ‘Fnac’ and one from ‘Atlantilivro’ were easily entered through the doors causing little structural damage. They are situated by the Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias, a busy area near the city’s nightclubs but the regular movement of people did not deter the assailants. The level of security has been the same as in previous years and the organizers want the police to investigate and ensure the safety of the event.

Of these, 18 were 100% without alcohol and were rewarded with 25 euros fuel vouchers. Eclipse in port. The new Celebrity Eclipse visits for the first time today. 2,905 tourists arrive from Southampton on this new cruise ship which first entered service on the 24th April. Earlier this year, the Eclipse was ranked as the most energy efficient in the world with 30% less energy consumption. The hull is constructed and painted to minimize water resistance, solar panels and LED lighting are used. The many innovations include a net space dedicated to Apple products such as iPods and MacBooks.

Reid’s Palace promotes Madeira in Russia. Reid’s Palace Hotel held a campaign in Moscow last week, demonstrating Madeiran cuisine. The event was held in the BlackBerry restaurant promoting the region as a tourist destination and the hotel which in recent years has viewed Russia as an emerging market. A direct charter flight from Moscow during summer 2008 filled 5% of hotel rooms, then this figure dropped in 2009 when there was no direct connection. The launch of TAP’s route from Lisbon to Moscow with connections to Madeira is an excellent opportunity for attracting Russian tourists requiring luxury hospitality. The Russia – Portugal route has proved successful so frequency has been increased from five to six flights a week. 30% of these passengers visit Madeira. Reid’s Palace sent the head chef Luís Pestana with two other chefs and the director of sales and marketing to inform the trade and journalists about Madeira and the hotel. The BlackBerry is famous in Russia for its eclectic mix of cuisines served in a friendly atmosphere with a good standard of service. It is promoted as excellent food at reasonable prices. On May 17th, the chefs provided a tasting menu followed by a press conference. A gala dinner was organized for the next day attended by celebrities and society figures of Moscow and Portuguese diplomats.

Fight to keep the collective memory of the brigalhó. This tuber, which resembles a yam, only appears in April and May growing under trees in Curral das Freiras. It has to be baked for 24 hours in an iron pot lined with vines and herbs popularly called azedas (azeda means sour and is a herb with an acidic flavour of the family Poligonáceas) added to make it edible without a burning sensation in the mouth. It can also be fried, seasoned with garlic or parsley. Cooked brigalhó can be frozen for consumption throughout the year. The raw tuber cannot be handled without wearing gloves because it causes skin irritation and when cooked, it forms unattractive small balls. In the past, the brigalhó was part of the diet of many poor families in Curral das Freiras. To keep this tradition alive, the local Casa do Povo has for the past eight years held the Amostra do Brigalhó. Yesterday, 300 kilos were prepared for people – especially visitors from outside the area – to try.

Portuguese manager following in Mourinho’s footsteps? the BBC reports:

As Jose Mourinho looks to make history with Inter Milan in the Champions League, another Portuguese manager is bidding to follow his route to success.

Pedro Sousa is serving an apprenticeship as a coach at Beira-Mar, winners of the Portuguese Second Division.

image caption : Stadium of SC Beira-Mar at Aveiro

But this week the young Portuguese boss is in Scotland participating in the Uefa "A" License introductory course at Largs in Ayrshire.

Mourinho’s success has an effect on other people in Portugal not necessarily just in the football industry

Sousa insists Mourinho’s success has an effect on other people in Portugal not necessarily just in the football industry. "Mourinho does more than that," insists Sousa.

"He influences people to be better in their work. To be more successful, to win more and aim for higher goals rather than standard goals."     link to full article:

Portuguese football coach Jose Mourinho writes his name into the history books. the BBC reports: "Jose Mourinho writes his name into the history books as Diego Milito inspired Inter Milan to Champions League glory against Bayern Munich at the Bernabeu
Milito set Inter on their way against the run of play with a clipped finish.

And he wrapped up a win built on the foundations of a solid defence with a solo effort that saw Inter become the first Italian side to win the Treble.

It means Mourinho, who won the cup with Porto in 2004, becomes the third man in history to win it with two clubs.

He joins Ernst Happel and Ottmar Hitzfeld in earning that remarkable accolade – at the age of only 47 – and, in doing so, ends a wait of more than 45 years for the Nerazzurri to regain Europe’s top prize.

That he did so by overcoming his mentor Louis van Gaal, with whom he worked at Barcelona in the 1990s, in the process only served to complete the ultimate season of personal vindication for the Portuguese.

‘Rock in Rio’ comes to Lisbon again

"…a series of rock festivals held in Brazil and later in Portugal and Spain. Future festivals are planned in Poznań (Poland)

Three incarnations of the festival were in Rio de Janeiro, in 1985, 1991 and 2001, four in Lisbon, in 2004, 2006, 2008 and 2010, and two in Madrid in 2008 and 2010. The shows were organized by entrepreneur Roberto Medina. In 2011, 2013, 2015 Rock in Rio may take place in Poznań on a reconstructed racing track.

"….’Rock in Rio’ is now a franchise, bought up by Lisbon’s municipality in 2004 and subsequently bought by Madrid a couple of years ago. The city gets the right to use the Rock in Rio brand and all the organisation and booking is done by the Brazilians who organised the Rock in Rio events.
A day ticket costs €57, and for that you get to see three biggish acts and one major name, making the event very poor value for money in comparison to British festivals. However, the acts do play full 90min to 2hr sets, rather than then truncated 40-50m sets you get at festivals. The bands/artists are paid an absolute fortune for playing and I think this is why a lot of the artists look out of shape and practice, because they’re not on tour but they can’t afford to turn it down." Whales & dolphins off the Calheta coast in May. Whales & dolphin boats off Calheta Madeira have spotted this week these species including: ‘Mesoplodon densirostris’ that’s a Blainville’s Beaked Whale or the Dense-beaked Whale, the widest ranging mesoplodont whale and perhaps the most documented.

Males reach at least 4.4 meters (14 ft 6 in) and 800 kg (1800 pounds), whereas females reach at least 4.6 meters (15′) and 1 tonne (2200 pounds). Juveniles are 1.9 meters long (6 ft 4 in) when born and weigh 60 kg (130 lb).

caption : Size comparison of an average human and a Blainville’s beaked whale

The whales are seen in groups of 3-7 individuals. Dives have been measured out to at least 22 minutes. When the cetacean surfaces, it does so slowly and with little splashing. It probably feeds mainly on squid as the stomach of one stranded individual contained only squid. Source wiki:

The ARKIVE site with pictures and movies of whales writes:

"A particularly easy species to identify, Blainville’s beaked whale has two distinctive horn-like teeth that grow from bulges in the lower jaw, and may be encrusted with barnacles. The forehead is flattened and the lower jaw is arched, giving the head a similar appearance to the right whale. Blainville’s beaked whale is dark blue-grey above, and light below, with a darker dorsal fin and eye patch. Females develop white upper and lower jaws, and both sexes have large white spots covering the entire body. Males are heavily and deeply scarred from fighting, as well as from attacks by the cookie-cutter shark, which leaves characteristic marks". Source

Saturday night: the Dutchman..a purveyor of quality and expansive football versus the Portuguese, the definitive "win at all costs" merchant. The BBC website reports:

Louis van Gaal, Manager of Bayern Munchen.

The ultimate season of personal vindication for ‘the special one’. "Now, in Saturday’s final against Bayern Munich, he has the chance to eclipse another of his former superiors Louis van Gaal.

And a man (Van Gaal) who upped the ante ahead of the final by claiming to be the better manager of the two, saying:

"The final is a match between a team who wants to play football and a team who just wants to stop football"

Portugal Telecom and Spain’s Telefónica squabble over Brazil. The Economist reports:

“The scale of Portugal Telecom is an asset for the country. We don’t want a small company, we want a big one.”

So pronounced Portugal’s prime minister, José Sócrates, this week, defending Portugal Telecom’s rejection of a hostile bid from Spain’s Telefónica for its share of Vivo, a fast-growing Brazilian mobile operator.

"Leaving Brazil would mean “amputating Portugal Telecom’s future”

Zeinal Bava, the boss of the Portuguese firm, added a warning that leaving Brazil would mean “amputating Portugal Telecom’s future”.

Yet such surgery may prove hard to resist, given Telefónica’s financial clout. The Spanish firm offered €5.7 billion ($7.2 billion) in cash for the bit of Vivo that it does not own. That is equivalent to over 80% of the total market value of Portugal Telecom itself". link to full article:

Homeless forced to be a tourist. A February 20th storm victim is still residing in a Pestana hotel which is upsetting for her as the sea view brings back memories. The other family members are accommodated in the Casa de Saúde São João de Deus whilst their house is being repaired. They are grateful for help but are tired of waiting. In three months, the IHM has rehoused 166 families but 24 families and 3 single people are still in temporary accommodation. They are: 3 single people in a youth hostel; 3 families in Casa de Saúde Câmara Pestana; 2 families in Casa de Saúde São João; 4 families awaiting rehousing in Ribeira Brava; 3 families in Inatel in Santa Cruz and 12 families in Pestana hotels.

Government forgets about Eiras. Residents living in Urbanização Eiras III are still waiting for the Regional Government to start the reconstruction of this urbanization three months after the storm. A protective wall is needed around the Ribeira dos Pretetes that runs opposite the development and destroyed 16 homes and 28 cars. The vice-president of Santa Cruz says repair costs are borne by owners and there are several credit lines set up for this purpose. A study of the stream is being undertaken so the council can take appropriate measures.

Chase stops scrap thieves. A van was suspected of carrying automobile parts stolen from an area for scrapped cars in Terreiro da Luta. The van was driven at high speed towards Funchal, pursued by a car occupied by three men linked to the scrap yard. They alerted the police, giving details of the van which the police brought to an emergency stop in Fundoa in São Roque. The three occupants of the van were arrested and the police are trying to determine the fate of the stolen parts which are still usable, some taken from cars damaged in February.

Bathers displeased with work at Garajau beach. Repair work at Garajau beach disturbs bathers who complain it should have been carried out earlier. They say the council has rushed the work as the beach is a dirty mixture of earth and sand and a destroyed wall needs rebuilding. The beach is in a protected area and will be the first to hoist the Blue Flag on June 1st. A councillor stated that the work has been ongoing for a while in preparation for the holiday season. Accesses are being cleared, areas repainted and equipment repaired but the wall is the responsibility of the Regional Government. He reminds bathers that the praia dos Reis Magos and praia das Palmeiras are available.

The total investment was 935,000 euros and 50% co-funded by the Regional Government. The four electrically-powered mini-buses have low environmental impact (pollution). They have increased mobility in central Funchal, especially for people with reduced mobility and car park users. In a survey in 2009, the Eco Line was rated ‘very good’ by 84% respondents. The number of passengers increased from 49,800 in 2007 to 63,000 in 2009.

Art will be created from waste material produced by the last natural disaster to strike the region. Themes explored are: sustainability with respect to natural resources and environmental impact, harmony between man and nature, and rebuilding after the destruction. The mayor of the municipality says this is rethinking the role of public art and its status in social responsibility. To promote interaction between the public and artists, local residents can participate by helping them.

FRIDAY 21st MAY

FRONT PAGE NEWS

Lisbon penalizes the councils. The Lei de Meios (Law of Means) means giving with one hand and taking with the other. The municipalities are at risk of losing the State transfer of 5% IRS that was regained this year by opposition parties and socialist deputies of Madeira and the Azores, against the wishes of the Socialist Party and the Government. This law was passed yesterday but the Finance Law of the Autonomous Regions 2010, that commits the State to transfer the IRS, may be suspended. The Left Bloc tried to correct this situation but the PS and PSD argued that the matter had been negotiated between José Sócrates and Alberto João Jardim. The municipalities in the Azores will also receive less revenue, going against the wishes of their president, Carlos César. Previously, the Finance Minister in Lisbon was against the islands receiving the suspended payment and Funchal Council had taken out a court injunction against the ministry.

Madeira receives less support from the EU. The Treaty of Lisbon does not pay enough attention to the fact that Madeira is an Outermost Region. RAM will receive less EU funding as allocation of Structural Funds will be dependant solely on regional GDP. In Madeira, GDP grew from 66.8% in 1995 to 96.3% in 2007 and is used as an indicator of development of the region. Thus, Madeira is being penalized for managing and investing funds for progression and development.

Debt grew 25% in 3 months. Residents, businesses and public administrators cannot pay interest on mortgages, credit cards or contracts in the specified time. Bad debt in March 2010 was 4.6%, an increase of 25% since last December, 130% increase over March 2009 and 283% increase over March 2008. 4% more loans were taken out last year, an increase of 45.6% over the past four years. Deposits fell by 5.1% and covered 77% of money lent last year, whereas they covered 85% in 2005. Less money was transferred from emigrants.

The onion attracts more farmers and continues to be ‘queen’ of Caniço. Onions are important to the economy of this parish. Crops were destroyed by the bad weather in January/February but have been replanted. Every year there is an increase in the number of onion growers and young people have started after the downturn in the construction sector. Locally grown onions are reputed to be healthier and better than the Spanish varieties and can be made into sweet dishes such as onion bread, onion cake and onion pudding. It is hoped that production in 2010 will reach 2,500 tonnes which will surpass the 2,450 tonnes grown last year. Between 2000 – 2009, the amount grown increased 57% which corresponded to 177% more income. Wholesale prices increased from 0.6 euro/kg in 2000 to 1.06 euro/kg in 2009. Organic onion production has also increased and these onions can reach twice the average price of conventional onions. 27% of land dedicated to onions lies in the parish of Caniço.
