Creditors give serious blow to Colombo’s. The three main creditors – BCP, Banif and Casais – of Sociedade Imobiliária e Turística do Campo de Baixo, the promoter of Colombo’s Resort, have applied for insolvency to recover the 110 million euros of debt. This is despite 16 million euros made available by the State (10 million), the Region (1 million) and Porto Santo Council (5 million) if the creditors transformed 35 million euros of debt into equity but there has been disagreement over the assessment of work undertaken and value of the asset. There will be one of two solutions: either a buyer emerges who is interested in completing the project or alternatively, the acquisition of goods in order to pay the creditors. Banif and BCP lent 70 million euros and Casais lent 40 million euros but it is suspected that some of the money was diverted to other projects by Sílvio Santos and Joaquim Coimbra. 9 million euros approved by the Government of the Republic under the PITER incentive will be diverted to another project in the region. Dozens of companies that have provided materials and equipment might have their debts repaid. Alberto Jardim has always considered Colombo’s as a private investment but the increasing degradation of the unfinished tourist resort is a problem to Porto Santo Council for land management, environmental quality and tourism. The Madeiran Silvio Santos was the principal promoter of Colombo’s, the most ambitious resort to be built in Porto Santo, and will have lost 7 million euros.

Average temperatures increased by half a degree. Between 2005 and 2009, the average annual temperatures increased by slightly more than half a degree centigrade. Last year, the annual mean temperatures ranged from 19.9 degrees centigrade in São Gonçalo to 20.4 degrees centigrade in Quinta Magnólia, in comparison with the temperatures in 2005, 19.3 and 19.7 degrees, respectively. In Porto Santo, annual mean temperature increased from 19.7 degrees centigrade in 2005 to 20.3 degrees last year. June to October were the warmest months and February the coldest. The region has a temperate climate with average summer temperatures not above 25 º C and average winter temperatures above 5 º C. Average annual solar radiation values have been consistent over the past five years and air quality has improved with fewer air pollutants (nitrogen oxides, ozone, carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide and particulates).

Bus lost its wheels on the road. A tourist bus lost two rear wheels whilst on the motorway and eventually managed to stop without causing any injuries to the passengers. The bus was in the area of Cancela, travelling between Santa Cruz – Funchal, taking tourists from the airport to their hotel. Neither the tour operator who rented the bus, JC Tours, nor the bus company, SAM, would comment on the accident apart from stressing that there were no injuries.

500,000 euros for the Atlantic Festival. Three new features this year. Some of the fireworks will be launched from floating platforms in the bay of Funchal. There will be no jury for the fireworks contest. The public can judge by placing votes in the tombolas in the Avenida do Mar, at hotels or on-line at festival atlantico. The third difference is that only Portuguese companies will take part, in a show of solidarity following the storm of February 20th. The fireworks displays on Saturday evenings will be: June 5th, Pirotecnia Minhota, "Colour and Light Emotions"; June 12th, HC & Filhos, "Magic in the Air"; June 19th, Luso Pirotecnia, “Madeira, Flower Name”; June 26th, Macedos Pirotecnia, "Charms". All displays start at 22.30 and last for 20 minutes. The Atlantic Festival incorporates the Madeira Music Festival and an exhibition will be held in the space InfoArte of SRTT.  Also included are the Festas de São João, with the Altares de São João from the 18th and Parade Marchas de São João on the 23rd. Of note, the Antique and Classic Car Show from the 14th on the Placa Central da Avenida Arriaga, and the XXIII Volta à Madeira – Classic Rally 2010 between the 23rd and 25th June.

Porto Moniz chose the best wines of the region. The Regional Competition of Bottled Wines took place in Porto Moniz yesterday. For white table wines, the winner was Rocha Branca 2007 and in second place, Barbusano 2008. For red table wines, the winner was Quinta do Moledo 2008 and in second place, Terras do Avô 2008. In the Madeira Wine category, HM Borges Sercial 10 Anos won and in second place, Justinos Sercial 10 Anos. For rosé wines, there was only Atlantis 2009. 11 producers entered 4 fortified wines, 1 rosé, 9 whites and 11 reds.

ECONOMY

Replenishment of the sand at Calheta. 3,800 tonnes of yellow sand are being unloaded at the port of Caniçal. The sand has been transferred from Morocco on the West Side bulk carrier. It will take about 120 lorry journeys to transport it from the port to Calheta beach. The last operation to replenish the beach was in June 2008 with 2,800 tonnes of sand.

EIB lends 75 million euros to EEM for ‘green energy’. The European Investment Bank has approved a loan to the Electricity Company of Madeira for investment in modernizing the infrastructure, improving energy efficiency and the greater use of alternative energy sources. This loan should guarantee the power supply to more than 135,000 customers in Madeira and Porto Santo. At present, 77% of energy consumed in the region is from petroleum derivatives and by 2016, renewable energy sources (wind and wave) should contribute to over 36%. The first loan from the EIB to the EEM was for 190 million euros in 2005. The EIB has previously granted two other loans to the region: 40 million euros to modernize the ports of Funchal, Caniçal and Porto Novo (total cost 100 million euros) and 200 million euros to the Regional Government to co-finance EU projects from 2000 – 2006 (total investment of 1,200 million euros).

Madeira Wine wins medals.  6 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze medals were won in the category fortified wines at the London International Wine Fair held between the 18th and 20th May. This is one of the most important wine fairs in the world. In 2009, the total amount of Madeira Wine exported to Britain was 305,722 litres, representing 1,728,082 euros. Britain is the second export market and accounts for 11.88% of total exports. There were two Madeira Wine tasting seminars at the event. The first was titled Disaster Relief and was led by Charles Metcalfe, the founder of Wine International Magazine. The aim was to promote wines from regions affected by natural disasters, such as Madeira, Turkey and Chile. The second seminar, Madeira Blends, was led by Trevor Elliot, a member of the Association of Wine Educators. This association will publish a book later this year dedicated to Madeira Wine.

The parish council has a budget for this festival of 14,000 euros this year, which is a reduction of between 10,000 – 12,000 euros from previous years, with extra funding provided by Funchal Council.

Price of fish increased 13%. In the first quarter of this year, there were 25.8% fewer tonnes of fish caught compared to 2009, leading to a price increase of 13% per kilo and the fishermen lost 14% revenue. The largest fall in income arose from 21.7% fewer tonnes of peixe espada caught. There were 37.7% fewer tonnes of tuna caught but due to the price increasing, the fishermen lost less income. Also, less mackerel (51.5%) and horse-mackerel (41.7%) landed. Investments by regional companies increased egg production by 22.6% and chicken meat by 10.1%. 26.5% fewer tonnes of pigs were slaughtered and 6.4% fewer tonnes of cattle. The trend in production over the past decade has been: -17.7% eggs, +50% chickens, -22.3% pigs, -16.15% cattle and -5.8% less fish although revenue to fishermen increased by 29.2%.

Fewer beaches monitored at Machico. Four of the seven beaches and bathing complexes in the county of Machico will not have SANAS lifeguards present at numbers indicated in the new national surveillance laws. This is possible as there will be no beaches in this county with Blue Flag designation this summer season. The beaches with a reduced number of lifeguards but with some supervision are: Praia de São Roque, Praia da Ribeira do Natal and Prainha no Caniçal, and Praia da Lagoa no Porto da Cruz. Bathing areas with an increased number are: Praia de Machico and the bathing complexes of Porto da Cruz and Caniçal. This reduction of lifesavers at four beaches will save the authority 12,000 euros but the total cost still reaches 38,000 euros. It is difficult to use the Praia do Natal because of consolidation of the slopes north of the beach.

OCCURRENCES

Fall into ribeiro reveals danger. The fall of an individual into a ribeiro in Câmara de Lobos, in between Castelejo and Casa Caída, revealed a lack of safety for passing pedestrians. The man showed some degree of intoxication, according to witnesses, and was sitting on the wall of the bridge over the stream. He overbalanced and fell 10 metres, resulting in deep lacerations to his head and suspected internal injuries. The bridge was damaged by the storm of February 20th, allowing the stream to overflow and severely damage neighbouring houses. A large part of the wall is still temporarily replaced by wood despite this being brought to the attention of the council who still have a lot of repair work outstanding.

A late addition by email from Mike :

This is just out of interest, and I’m sure it would be to some people?

On Britains got Talent last night there were a dance troupe by the name of "Dance Flavourz" and they were led by a guy called Francis.

When we first started to go to Madeira some 12/14 years ago, Francis used to do the round of hotels with his dance troupe "Francis Dancers",after a few years they became known as something else? The last time we saw him in Madeira he was dancing at the Casino, that was until we saw him on TV last night.

The actual clip is now on Youtube.  (Dance Flavourz is easily googled ) I don’t know if anyone recognised him but the clip has been viewed 105000 times already.

We are always looking at your website / blog. regards Mike

No football manager has ever won championships in England, Italy and Spain….

BBC Sport reports: “Real Madrid have sacked coach Manuel Pellegrini, with the Spanish giants set to turn to Inter Milan’s Jose Mourinho as his replacement at the Bernabeu.

Mourinho is expected to head to Real after winning the Champions League in Madrid with Inter on Saturday.

"I’m ready to admit to some mistakes but Mourinho’s hiring is an opportunity that Madrid could not miss," said Real president Florentino Perez.

Inter are resigned to losing the 47-year-old former Chelsea boss to Madrid. However, Inter president Massimo Moratti has suggested Mourinho’s departure could be a protracted affair, with the Italian club demanding up to £13.5m in compensation given the Portuguese coach’s contract at the San Siro runs until 2012….

Portugal agrees to protect the Aquatic Warbler. From the ‘Birdlife International Community’ website:

“The meeting agreed to extend the geographical coverage of the agreement, originally comprising 15 countries, to include 7 new countries in Europe and Africa (Luxemburg, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Portugal, Slovakia, Switzerland) along the migration route of the Aquatic Warbler and in its wintering areas in sub-Sahelian Africa

The Aquatic Warbler is the rarest and the only globally threatened passerine bird found in mainland Europe. Apart from a very small remnant population in West Siberia, its breeding grounds are completely confined to Europe. Once widespread and numerous in fen mires and wet meadows throughout the continent, the Aquatic Warbler has disappeared from most of its former range. Nowadays, its global population of only 10,200-13,800 males is confined to less than 40 sites in only six countries, with four sites supporting over 80 % of the global population. The only regular wintering site known so far is the one discovered in Senegal. Habitat loss in Sub-Sahelian Africa is likely to turn into a bottleneck.”

Government officials from states across Europe and Africa, as well as experts and conservationists, came together in Biebrza National Park, Poland, to discuss the survival of mainland Europe’s rarest songbird, the Vulnerable Aquatic Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola.

The UNEP Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) convened this meeting to enhance the future of this bird species managed and protected under the auspices of the CMS agreement on the Aquatic Warbler.

Portugal legend Eusebio believes that should England win the right to host the 2018 World Cup it would be great for football. Goal.com reports:

Despite the fact that Spain, Portugal and Russia are also in the running to host the 2018 World Cup, Eusebio believes that England deserves to host the World Cup again.

Image caption : Eusébio statue, outside of S.L. Benfica’s stadium, Lisbon, Portugal

"To have the World Cup back in England would be very good for football,” Eusebio told The Mirror.

"Your country has a massive history in the game, a lot of tradition and a lot of passion.

"The Premier League is the hardest league in the world right now, it has a lot of big players. "You have also got good infrastructure, good conditions and if the World Cup was to be organized as well as it was back in 1966, then it will be a great tournament."

Eusebio was the top scorer when England hosted the World Cup in 1966, scoring nine goals and leading Portugal to the semi-finals, where they lost 2-1 to the hosts.

And even with strong rival bids from Spain, Portugal and Russia, Eusebio believes the chance to host the World Cup should return to England.

The Portugal legend believes that England can win the World Cup in South Africa if they emulate the play of the 1966 squad! Link to full article:

Queremos a Selecção com bigode na África do Sul (We want the selection with a moustache in South Africa)! ESPN soccernet reports:

Portugal defender Paulo Ferreira has quashed talk that his side would grow moustaches as a gesture of solidarity before (and during) the World Cup.

A Facebook group has been set up by fans in the hope that the Portuguese would grow their facial hair for the same reasons that Romania’s squad all bleached their hair in 1998.

Image caption : A man with a dark black moustache

The group, titled Queremos a Selecção com bigode na África do Sul (We want the squad with a moustache in South Africa), has over 3,000 fans and some supporters were seen holding up banners during the 0-0 draw with the Cape Verde Islands.

However, Ferreira claimed Portugal would not be pulling such a stunt. ”I don’t think so, I could never see myself with a moustache. It would only make us figures of fun,” he told the Daily Mail.

The Chelsea defender, however, will be sporting his own good luck charm in South Africa a crucifix given to him by his mother after the injury to his knee that kept him from playing for eight months last year. link to full article:

Anyone who has the impression that life has returned (more or less at least) to normal for those worst affected by the floods on 20th February will be surprised to hear that there are still many cases of suffering and need. Despite the recent announcement that over €6 million have been amassed in donations, it seems that that money is staying in government coffers, earmarked for structural repairs and rebuilding properties.

The secondary school in Ribeira Brava is trying to help out in one such situation of hardship, and the details are briefly as follows.

On that dreadful day, one family of four in the higher zones of Ribeira Brava lost their house and everything inside, and were left stranded in the open for two days without any food. The father who was isolated from his family was out and about at the time, and was stranded from his wife and children. The shock of the situation left him unable to speak and suicidal.

The two children, a c.16 year old boy and his younger sister, both students in the school in Ribeira Brava, and their parents, have had to rely on help from local people to get through the last 3 months, with nothing coming from official sources as far as I can establish. Although they now have somewhere to live, they have practically no personal possessions and not much in the way of household essentials.

Professora Magda Borges in the school is trying to muster support for the family, to get them what they need, particularly clothes. So far two TVs, a microwave, and a vacuum cleaner have been donated. Some money has been collected, and the children will be taken into Funchal on Saturday to buy a few items of clothing. Basic things like bed sheets, blankets, kitchen utensils, cutlery, crockery etc are still lacking, and many other household items also.

If anyone can help, can they please take any items they can spare to the school, or if that is not possible contact me and I will see if I can arrange a collection, if it is worthwhile.

Anything taken to the school, please mark for the attention of Professora Magda Borges.

Address :  Escola Secundária Padre Manuel Álvares. Rua São Francisco , 9350-211 RIBEIRA BRAVA. Madeira

If anyone feels able to make a financial donation, a cheque is probably the best way to do it. Made payable to ‘Esmeralda de Abreu Ramos’, and  posted to Magda Borges at the address above. If necessary the Paypal button on the right of this page can be used to donate by credit card, but as Paypal deduct charges for the service, it is not the best option. Please mark any Paypal financial donations ‘school appeal’. Many thanks in advance … Der

Levada dos tornos walk above Funchal. The Levada dos Tornos walk stretches along the mountainside above Funchal, the capital of Madeira. It is one of the most popular levada walks in Madeira. Easy to get to by public transport and possessing the advantage of having various starting and ending points, you can tailor the walk to suit your desires. The entire route is over 25km and will take even the most experienced walker a complete day to cover. However, we usually truncate our journey to one that takes around 3 hours.

Hedgie Misses Out On Madeira. Overflowing with five-star hotels, Madeira has the bonus of a sub-tropical environment to rival North Queensland. The island is lush with an astonishing array of trees, plants and flowers. This alone brings regular visitors back two or three times a year. Then, of course, you have the sea, sailing and whale and dolphin watching. And those yummy Portuguese custard tarts at breakfast. This is the antithesis of a place like Dubai. There are no loud, sunburned Brits with gold chains around their necks and Louis ‘Voo-ton’ bags by the pool. Instead it’s a place for well-heeled and charming Brits, some bookish Germans, and a fair few fit Swissies going for short eight-hour hikes. HERE

An unlikely hero. Joe Berardo. For a man whose empire grew out of the mine dumps of the East Rand, nothing is more important than the cultural experience. Joe Berardo, born in Madeira in the ‘40s, left school at 13-and-a-half…. Entrance to his many art galleries, museums and gardens is gratis, and even tasting his wine attracts no charge, so a grateful Portuguese public mobs him at every turn. We had to hide under the wisteria in the garden of his 18th-century Loridos manor house while Telmo fetched his five-year-old Jag. More information: Wikipedia:           ARTICLE

Europe’s remoter regions. Last week during their Parliamentary session MEPs backed agricultural reform to help remote areas of the European Union, including Portugal’s Azores and Madeira, the Spanish Canary Islands and France’s La Réunion Islands. We spoke to Portuguese Socialist MEP Luís Paulo Alves who steered the measures through the European Parliament. It will enable the Azores to diversify its agriculture activity, which is important for its economy. Moreover, both the Azores and Madeira will be allowed to use specific types of vines which are forbidden elsewhere for local consumption until the vineyards are able to switch to other varieties. The outermost regions at the heart of Europe. On 27-28 May, the European Commission is organising the first Forum for Outermost Europe in partnership with the Spanish Presidency of the European Union. The event will provide a better understanding among the European institutions and the EU Member States of the situation in the nine outermost regions (OR)*. The Forum will also provide an opportunity to strengthen dialogue with these regions and exchange experience. Another aim is to send a strong political message: the EU will continue to take account of the specific characteristics of these regions and support them with a view to transforming their potential into real growth opportunities. This means, for example, strengthening their capabilities in the fields of research and renewable energy sources, or using their unique position to measure the effects of climate change.

Uncertainties over the CINM (IBC) affect more than 2,000. The future of the Centro Internacional de Negócios da Madeira (International Business Centre) is not guaranteed. At stake is revenue of 60 million euros per year from fees and taxes paid to the Regional Government. For the past two years, Portugal has been in negotiations with the European Commission to raise the ceiling of IRC (corporation income tax) discounts but negotiations have stopped as discounts are incompatible with the Stability and Growth Pact (PEC). Failed negotiations could affect 2,000 – 3,000 jobs in the region and thousands of employees of firms in the IBC might be relocated to other countries. It would be advantageous to increase tax discounts to attract new businesses to the centre. Other countries with special tax arrangements are the Netherlands, Malta and Luxembourg.

Residents pay for night watchmen. By the end of summer, Funchal will have four night watchmen. Residents and businessmen in areas where there are patrols can pay a voluntary contribution agreed between them and the guard. Areas have been chosen on the basis of complaints of burglary and theft: São Martinho, zona velha (old zone), central Funchal and Madalena, and Santo António. Night watchmen will patrol between 10 pm and 7 am and residents need to know their phone numbers so they can urgently contact them. The night watchmen are allowed to carry electric guns (tasers) and aerosols (pepper spray) but not firearms. They will also carry a short baton, radio, whistle and handcuffs and can be identified by their uniform, card and badge and can patrol with a dog. If they breach regulations, fines range from 15 to 4,500 euros.

Residential tourism project budgeted at 20 million euros. The old fábrica de águas at Porto Santo will become a thermal spa, part of the Residential Tourism Health and Well-Being Project promoted by the Water Company of Porto Santo. The original idea was for a museum but a thermal spa has been chosen because of medicinal properties of the mineral water of Fontinha. There will be saunas, Turkish baths and pools and 64 two bedroom fully furnished single-storey dwellings with areas of 120 square metres surrounded by 50,000 square metres of green areas for leisure and recreation. Cleaning, security and gardening services and traditional hotel facilities will be available. Clientele targeted will be retirees who want to spend the winter months there (October – May) for stays longer than a fortnight, and local young families in summer. Thus, the project will not be dependent on air transport or subject to seasonality and will promote local trade and employment.

Minors suspected of burglary. Two youths aged 14 and 15 were seen suspiciously handling a lot of equipment in the bairro da Nogueira in Camacha. Some of these goods that were stolen from two houses in Nogueira were hidden in homes of relatives. The boys were careful not to disturb the contents of the burgled houses so they could return later. They are from dysfunctional families in this area and know the routines of the neighbours and that the house owners would be abroad at the times of the robberies. The boys will attend the Family Court for the judge to decide on the best option.

Illegal occupation of home in Nogueira.  An illegal occupation of a house in Nogueira by a family that barricaded themselves inside led to police action. The family claimed they were legal occupants and refused to leave the house and return the keys to the IHM. The manager of the social housing complex asked the police to evict the women and the locks were changed. Tenants are anxious as the southern part of the estate is being demolished, as 60 prefabricated homes are considered too small for the present families who are being relocated to the northern part of the estate.

—–Commentators in the Diario are not sympathetic towards residents of Nogueira as they are seen as violent lucrative drug dealers, people who refuse to work and who vandalise the area.

CULTURE

FRONT PAGE NEWS

Public transport will be more expensive in July. The cost of using public transport will increase from July 1st due to the implementation of the Austerity Plan. VAT increases by 1% and new limits on public enterprise borrowing force the Regional Government to increase ticket prices for Horários do Funchal buses. The value of the increase is unknown but it will be more than 1%, probably averaging 3%. Similar increases are likely with all bus companies throughout the region.

Consortium of six banks finance ViaMadeira. A consortium of six banks will share the risk of a 100 million euros long term loan to ViaMadeira. This should allow the Regional Government to finance the outstanding debt to civil construction firms that are running the motorways in Madeira. It is expected that this lifeline will be expensive to the region. According to the British newspaper Project Finance Magazine, Millenium BCP, Banco Espírito Santo, Santander, Barclays, Banco de Investimento da Caixa Geral de Depósitos (Caixa BI) and the Spanish bank Caja Madrid agreed to the loan when BPI withdrew because of the current financial environment. The European Investment Bank defines the conditions for Portuguese banks to lend money to public sector firms and the Regional Government has exhausted its borrowing capacity and no longer has a good relationship with banks.

Casa do Povo de Gaula distributes Amoreiras. The blackberry bush is characteristic of the parish of Gaula. A hundred bushes are being distributed to the local population this week to maintain the cultivation of this traditional fruit. This might enable blackberry liqueur and similar delicacies to be served to visitors at the local agricultural market.

Natural Park launches new solidarity book. The Serviço do Parque Natural da Madeira (SPNM) is to launch a new book to show solidarity with the victims of February 20th storm. The text will be in both Portuguese and English to captivate overseas audiences. The ‘Paraíso Natural’/Natural Paradise will be available during the last quarter of this year. The book will show that Madeira is still beautiful and is produced in partnership with RCL-Imagem e Comunicação. It is formed from a selection and compilation of previously published books of SPNM with new texts on the areas Pico Areeiro (Maciço Montanhoso Central) and Porto Santo. The book should be on sale from October at bookstores, tourism offices and SPNM.

Sonnets from the Portuguese, No 43, by Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Guardian article:

"From its brilliantly unassuming beginning, Barrett Browning’s Sonnet 43 – better known for its opening line, "How do I love thee?" – unfolds into a merging of erotic and mystical experience that recalls Dante. Every good sonnet strives to encompass the world in its grain of sand: occasionally, there’s an inner mass that defies all logic. It’s as if a Life had been written on the back of a postcard. This week’s poem by Elizabeth Barrett Browning has that quality. It’s the penultimate sonnet in a sequence of 44, Sonnets from the Portuguese the one that begins, "How do I love thee?"

The sonnets are not, of course, real translations. The title of the sequence is said to have come about because Robert Browning had admired one of Elizabeth’s earlier poems, Caterina to Camões. This poem was a dramatic monologue; that extrovert form that Browning was to make strikingly his own. The ruse of presenting her love poems as translations enabled Barrett Browning to explore freely what we can fairly assume to have been her own feelings – and, in 1850, to publish the results without embarrassment."

"Sonnets from the Portuguese, XLIII
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
I love thee to the depth and breadth and height
My soul can reach, when feeling out of sight
For the ends of Being and ideal Grace.
I love thee to the level of everyday’s
Most quiet need, by sun and candlelight.
I love thee freely, as men strive for Right,
I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise.
I love thee with the passion put to use
In my old griefs, and with my childhood’s faith;
I love thee with a love I seemed to lose
With my lost saints, – I love thee with the breath,
Smiles, tears, of all my life! – and if God choose,
I shall but love thee better after death."

Luís de Camões – considered Portugal’s, and the Portuguese language’s, greatest poet

Image caption : Luís de Camões, Portuguese’s greatest poet

“His mastery of verse has been compared to that of Shakespeare, Vondel, Homer, Virgil, and Dante. He wrote a considerable amount of lyrical poetry (in Portuguese and in Spanish) and drama but is best remembered for his epic work Os Lusíadas (The Lusiads). His recollection of poetry The Parnasum of Luís de Camões was lost in his lifetime.”

-Camões is the subject of the first romantic painting from a Portuguese painter, A Morte de Camões (1825), by Domingos Sequeira, now lost.

-He is one of the characters in Donizetti’s grand opera Dom Sébastien, Rei de Portugal

-Camões figures prominently in the book Het verboden rijk (The Forbidden Empire) by the Dutch writer J. Slauerhoff, who himself made several voyages to the Far East as a ship’s doctor.

-Today, a museum dedicated to Camões can be found in Macau, the Museu Luís de Camões.      Source: Wiki:

East Timor: some of its history. An article of ‘The Australian’

“In many ways, East Timor’s story is a story of war. The former Portuguese colony has effectively been in some kind of conflict since Australian troops first arrived on December 17, 1941.

East Timor was returned to the Portuguese in 1945, wasted away as a colonial backwater and was then invaded by Indonesia when the colonists left in 1975.

After the people voted for independence from Indonesia it became Asia’s first new nation of the 21st century in May, 2002.

Portuguese colonisation : Source: ‘Wikipedia’

"The Portuguese were the first Europeans to colonize the Maritime Southeast Asia when they arrived in the sixteenth century.[11] They established outposts in the (now Indonesian) Maluku Islands and Timor and surrounding islands. During the House of Habsburg’s rule over Portugal (1580–1640), all surrounding outposts were lost and eventually came under Dutch control by the mid-seventeenth century. Effective European occupation of a small part of the territory only began after 1769, when the city of Dili, the capital of so-called Portuguese Timor, was founded.[12]

Treaty of Lisbon 1859

In the nineteenth century, the Netherlands gained a foothold on the western half of the island West Timor, and formally received it in 1859 through the Treaty of Lisbon. The definitive border was established by the Hague Treaty of 1916, and it remains the international boundary between the successor states East Timor and Indonesia.

For the Portuguese, East Timor remained little more than a neglected trading post until the late nineteenth century. Investment in infrastructure, health, and education was minimal. Sandalwood remained the main export crop with coffee exports becoming significant in the mid-nineteenth century. In places where Portuguese rule was asserted, it tended to be brutal and exploitative.[13] At the beginning of the twentieth century, a faltering home economy prompted the Portuguese to extract greater wealth from its colonies which met Timorese resistance.[13]

In late 1941, Portuguese Timor was briefly occupied by Dutch and Australian troops in an attempt to preempt a Japanese invasion of the island. The Portuguese Governor protested the occupation, and Dutch forces returned to the Dutch side of the island.[14]

The Japanese landed and drove the small Australian force out of Dili, and the mountainous interior became the scene of a guerrilla campaign, known as the Battle of Timor. Waged by Allied forces and Timorese volunteers against the Japanese, the struggle resulted in the deaths of between 40,000 and 70,000 Timorese.[15] Following the end of the war, Portuguese control was reinstated.

The process of decolonization in Portuguese Timor began in 1974, following the change of government in Portugal in the wake of the Carnation Revolution. Owing to political instability and more pressing concerns over the decolonisation of Angola and Mozambique, Portugal effectively abandoned East Timor and it unilaterally declared itself independent on November 28, 1975.[citation needed] Nine days later, it was invaded and occupied by Indonesian forces before the declaration could be internationally recognized.

Sparrow Force killed an estimated 2000 Japanese soldiers for a loss of only 40 men

‘The Australian’ article continues:

The Sparrow Force, later reinforced by troops from the 2/4 Independent Company, engaged 20,000 Japanese troops for more than a year, including the elite 48th Division. The last Aussie troops were eventually evacuated in February 1943 on a submarine, with the Sparrow Force having killed an estimated 2000 Japanese soldiers for a loss of only 40 men.

image caption : Sparrow Force Landing Site

The arrival of the Australians was a pre-emptive invasion of Timor (the Portuguese were told not to co-operate) after Japan entered World War II. East Timor is the closest part of Asia to Australia, and the Australian government was rightly concerned that Japan could use its runways to start bombing missions targeting Australia. After East Timor fell, Darwin was bombed numerous times by planes using the airports in and around Dili.” Link to full article:

India crash puts spotlight on runway safety. Runway redesign often takes time, frequently requires planning permission, needs to take account of environmental issues and costs significant sums of money. Changes cannot come overnight. With many major airports having been built many years ago, they are constrained by the availability of land in the surrounding area. HERE

1. The runway at Toronto Pearson airport was noted for its limited Resa facility. An Air France jet that careered off the end of the runway is understood to have landed in poor weather prompting both overshoot and lack of traction.

2. Norman Manley International Airport, Jamaica and (6) Wellington International, New Zealand, are built such that the sea is at each end of the runway.

3. London City in the Docklands is restricted to aircraft with Short Take Off and Landing (STOL) capability given both runway length and environmental issues.

4. Funchal airport on the island of Madeira is partly built on concrete pillars driven into the seabed, given that it is land constrained.

5. Lugano, Switzerland, is constrained by the mountain ranges around it, which limits airlines to operating only particular types of aircraft suited to such operating conditions.

99 years in prison for 18 in drug case. 18 defendants in a drugs case received a total of 99 years and 9 months in prison, the sentences ranging from 10 years and 3 months to 3 years with all the defendants convicted. Wiretapping evidence showed minors were used for drug trafficking. 14 defendants were from Câmara de Lobos where they sold cocaine and heroin to consumers living in the social housing estates and 4 were foreigners who imported the drugs. The ringleader, a native of Guinea-Bissau, received the longest sentence. He purchased drugs in Guinea-Bissau, the Netherlands and Senegal.  The other foreigners were a Brazilian and two brothers from Guinea. They hired three Italian or Portuguese carriers, one found with a kilo of drugs inside his body and another had 500 grams hidden in her luggage. Two defendants were given lighter sentences, one because he refused to use minors and the other was younger than 18 at the time. The children involved were all sons and nephews of the defendants, some as young as ten. A married couple were heard to agree over the phone not to allow their child to go to school in case he spoke about the family ‘business’. None of the defendants expressed regret and were disappointed when they were given long sentences.

Levada for another 150 years. The Levada do Frade, between Ribeiro Frio and Portela, is one of the most popular walking trails in Madeira. The entire length of the 13.8 kilometre levada has been made safer for walkers, at a cost of 1.661 million euros, 85% co-financed by the Fund for Rural Development. It also provides irrigation for 50 hectares belonging to 600 farmers. The levada has been here for 150 years and will last for another 150, stated a 67 year old resident of Ribeiro Frio who has 36 years of experience in building levadas. In contrast to the new levada, there is still the old problem of traffic chaos in Ribeiro Frio, especially during milder weather and on Saturdays (photo). Hundreds of tourists arrive together in coaches, taxis and rent-a-cars and spend an hour walking the Levada da Serra do Faial to the miradouro dos Balcões to view the UNESCO classified Laurissilva forest. The car park is often full but the long promised multi-storey car park has still not been built. The Environmental Education Centre in Ribeiro Frio has now reopened and is accessible to any visitor.

RTP’s public services threatened in Madeira. Public service television and radio in Madeira are threatened because RTP does not have enough regional human and material resources capable of satisfying the requirements of the Regulatory Authority for the Media. The former director resigned eight months ago citing lack of resources and conditions, and little has changed since then. There are still only 14 full-time TV journalists and 9 for the radio stations so they cannot guarantee pluralism and respond to the different demands of Madeiran society. The new journalists promised in March have not been recruited nor the investment for studios and installations in Santo António. 17% of employees are full-time journalists compared to 26.2% in the Azores and 25.9% in Porto. The Madeiran taxpayer contributes 50% of the 6 million euros total cost of RTP-Madeira.

Teleférico do Garajau safety test. At 10 am tomorrow morning, a mock accident on the cable car to the bathing complex of Garajau will test the local fire departments and equipment. The cable car with two or three passengers inside a cabin will be stopped midway and ten rescuers from the fire departments of Santa Cruz and Funchal should be able to demonstrate that the cable car is completely safe to use. This is the second rescue exercise using Garajau beach. Last June, a collision between the Lobo Marinho ferry and an areeiro (sand dredger ?) was simulated which would cause a fuel spillage that could pollute the Nature Reserve of Garajau.

CULTURE

Solidarity collection ‘Create a Home’ opens Friday at Mouraria. 19 artists will display artwork in the forms of painting, sculpture, photography and digital art at Mouraria Gallery from May 29th until 17th July. The pieces will be on sale priced from 35 euros to raise funds for the Centre for Support to the Homeless (CASA). The collection can be viewed between 15.00 – 19.00 Monday to Friday and 10.00 – 13.00 on Saturdays.

Finally from Sue out West :

"This is to let you know that there will be a ‘Musical’ evening aka Sing-a-long type Karaoke evening which will be held in the Salão de Festa at the Costa Verde Restaurant (Miradorou) in Arco da Calheta on Tuesday 15th June at 8 p.m.

You don’t need to be a Pavarotti, Diva, or Pop Star, but if you have any vocal talents, or just want to ‘have a go’ that would be great.  Alternatively you could sponsor someone else to do the ‘deed’ and provide the entertainment on your behalf.  We hope to have some willing vocalists (multi-national), so it should be a ‘fun’ evening.

The event is to raise money for a local family.  Their 16 year old son needs a kidney transplant and his courageous mother is undergoing tests to become a ‘live’ donor as transplant organs are hard to come by in Portugal. Although the surgery expenses etc are met by Portugal, the family have many additional expenses such as transport to Funchal for numerous appointments, medication and loss of earnings etc. before and especially after the operation.

We will have a prize raffle and maybe even an auction for some lovely prizes, so even if you cannot attend you may like to donate a prize or donation.
