Portuguese authorities in the Algarve, shortly after the Revolution, cleared the beaches of all buildings. The glorious sand had become a mess, with powerful people building on the beaches as they wished. Shacks were erected to be cafes and restaurants, discharging effluent onto the clean beaches and the bather's ocean. The beach is the income for Porto Santo, it is the raison d'etre Tourists need beaches to be spotless and unblemished by crap buildings which due to their proximity to the ocean discharge effluent directly into it.
