Blimey what a weather night and day, so much rain , i went down to see the waves in Caniço de Baixo, the sea had been right up on the promenade, and the sea is a disgusting brown, the beach has had a great deal of the pebbles and rocks washed away and looks quite flat, not seen waves that big for a long time, and seagulls everywhere eating the the filth on top of the sea, plenty of people down there watching...

Will post photos and Videos, and Der will be the first to let you know.

Ho ho ho Jon, a bit of Xmas humour always welcome! Re JPP, I think independence is still possible with some sort of alliance alongside. Must put the people first though.

And yes we have a brown sea here Becky, and a lot of homeless hungry ducks again. Anyone down this way with a few bread scraps or other suitable nosh will make 80+ friends very quickly.

Re tax returns, there is still some time to go before the first deadlines, but I would certainly recommend doing the online version rather than on paper, because the online forms automatically highlight any errors (but not missing information of course) that can be corrected immediately. It is tricky the first time without a doubt, but note taking and screen / form print-offs for future reference will definately make the second time much easier. You need to apply for a password straight away though, as it may take a couple of weeks to be sent by post (assuming it still works that way).

I am on my 7th Portuguese tax return this year, and it should take me an hour or two, as opposed to a day or two the first time I did it. That of course depends on having all the necessary documentation to hand.

The other thing that is important is understanding what deductions one can include to reduce tax liabilty, such as medical expenses, certain education expenses, insurance premiums (in part in some cases) and other housing costs. And those are normally applicable whether you work or not.

Jenny, I have asked our Portuguese teacher about tax help. She suggests
you try visiting the Financas at the Loja da Cidadao in Funchal. They are
usually very helpful & may have enough English to explain everything but if
not, she is very willing to meet you there and translate. She is a lovely lady and
speaks excellent English. If you need her details ask Der to give you my
email address.

Re. the weather & storms, I heard today that the road from Canical to
Porta da Cruz was closed today because of rock falls. Can't wait for the
sunshine tomorrow, Jon!

Sensible plan to plant new forest.
Sound a nice green investment especially with an an annual income
Good for lots of reasons, including the myriad of insects and their predators hardwood trees support.
Great for the stabilisation of hill slopes and the resultant reduction in floods.
Nice wood for harvest time.
Improves the look of the countryside.
Whether such an investment is organised by an honest organisation--who can confirm?
Bankers--eh?
