On the Internet archive there is a book called the Journal of Emily Shore who came to Funchal in around 1836 where she died of consumption at the young age of 19. It gives an interesing picture of Funchal – but the Madeira references are right at the end of the book and so you have to scroll through. If you like history, it is well worth the effort.

Hi Ellen, yes unfortunately I have to sleep at night, but will try and do so less in future, but thanks very much for that information. The email for sending stuff in for the main blog is blog@madeira4u.com, but you should already have that, and it is also on each daily blog at the end.

Little snippets like ‘cabbage €0.55 a kilo in Sã’ are best in the comments, but anything more substantial news like items are better emailed to me. If you want any photos included, either attach them, or even better include the full url (http://www.etc) if it is online (right click on the photo and ‘properties’). If possible ensure it is spellchecked and accents added, otherwise I have to do that. Thanks

Re the website with the featured Ella du Cane book, I had a look at some of the other ‘Madeira’ books that have been scanned in and made public, and there is quite a lot, and some really old and interesting stuff too.

Hi All, does anybody know if the procedure for paying car tax on-line has changed this year? The only section I can find on the financia website are to calculate a payment by entering all details of the vehicle, whereas previousy our details have already been there.

Any information will be gratefully received.

The book ‘The Flowers and Gardens of Madeira’ … believe it or not … I own an edition (also 1909). It was a gift from a good friend of mine. The paintings of Ella Du Cane are truly wonderful.

I am glad you have found an online version of it … because now I can read it without damaging the fragile book itself.
