Well done sheila for deciding to stick to doing what you do so well, it is a very sad story , but i know the street dogs round my way are very happy and well fed , i think they are better where they are than being sent to spad and maybe facing death, we have names for them all and they often come for a walk along the sea front with me.

Nice pic Jon, i like looking at all the old pictures of Madeira, and boy has it changed.

My comment on the Diário readers' letters page today went like this:

"Cães abandonados no Paul da Serra:
But why does nobody do anything to mobilise the Government or the Câmaras? Already many shocked tourists take abandoned animals to SPAD, which means almost certain death for them.
SPAD have 293 places for dogs and cats and take in more than 3000 per year. What is lacking are education programmes about how to care for animals and above all sterilisation programmes. There is always money for football."

I am not aware of any municipal kennels other than the one in Funchal, which is part of SPAD's 293 places. Another one was built in Porto Santo at a cost of more than 800.000!!! Euros, was opened 5 minutes before the elections but is not yet operational. Nothing has been decided how to operate it.

Thanks to Sam and Angie for kind remarks. Jaquine, there is a legal requirement for councils to set up their own municipal kennels. So far, I believe that only two have done so. Money is so tight that new kennels have a very low priority indeed. Even when such a kennel is set up, animals will be kept for two weeks only before being destroyed, if they have not been claimed or re-homed during that period. I have been convinced by you all that it would not be right for me to give up at this stage. What is that Chinese saying? Something like "It is better to light one small candle than to curse the darkness". Thanks everybody.

I just wanted to say I thoroughly agreed with what Jon wrote so well in response to Sheila's article.
Although I am new to Madeira only been here a couple of months I have already taken a puppy from SPAD and she is so lovely.
After my old dog died at 13 years 3 years ago I had to wait as we knew were moving. Before moving here I would find all I could written on SPAD and knew when I finally arrived that that was the place to find my puppy. She's chewing my trouser leg as I write. Without the written articles and publicity I would never have known where to find her and.....
Yes it is only one dog, but please don't give up Sheila.

I remember reading a month or so ago that there will be kennels built, I
think it said in each Freguesia for strays to be taken to... does anyone else
know about this for certain? At least this would be a step forwardl, so that
the abandoned animals would hopefully not suffer so much.

Hi Sheila

I just read your bit and now the comments, and I also want to say that you have done terrific work and when you wrote for my paper, it did bring awareness to the plight of the animals and in some small cases, a little bit of help did come from the general public. With your articles and plea for food, people were generous and gave (although it wasn't enough) it showed that through your persistance, your message was being heard!
Please don't lose heart, keep up the good work....

Smashing old picture.
What a toboggan ride this rail track could have been after the engine blew up.
Install a couple of loops on the way down and a world leading ride emerges.

Thanks Der but without generous support over a number of years from you, Sam, Jon and a few others, nothing at all could have been achieved.

Agreed in total Der.
Repeat post from "How well do you ........"

Sheila you HAVE made an impact – we “picked up” on SPAD due to your written works – PLEASE do NOT give up……look at Gizmo and Lucy!

The mountain of world wide human and animal suffering is huge, growing even daily, whilst the rulers, leaders and politicians seem only concerned in themselves, their wealth and gratification.

No, one single person cannot change the “system” and perhaps that is indeed why individuals are reluctant to speak out, comment or otherwise engage.

BUT we must not retreat behind our closed front doors (and double glazing a ka U.K.) – Madeira is still an “open” society with many good people doing their best (some with government initiative) and the war on corruption here is working – I know, I speak from personal experience – don’t “give up”….the recession is not your fault.

The WORLD needs people who care and the more that do and SHOW it, the more chance we have of making a difference – go for it girl, we’re right behind you on the animal issues and alongside you on all the others!

You have done a great job Sheila, so don't lose heart. You have raised awareness for those who live here and for visitors coming here also, and although it may seem that we are swamped with problems and sad and cruel animal stories, without doubt you have made a difference. There is absolutely no doubt about it.

What the Diário with SPAD has done for animal welfare amongst Portuguese speakers, you have matched for the English speakers. The impacts of the crisis, and that fact that people generally don't care enough to do anything, are not your fault, and things could be much worse today without your efforts.
