Carnival – 21st February 2009, Funchal, Madeira, Carnival Parade Special

February 22, 2009 By: admin Category: Uncategorized News

What a great surprise to wake up this morning and find my email account jam packed with carnival photos, over 60 so far and it’s only 11am!

I did prepare today’s blog, but how could I possibly pick one photo of the day from all those. So a decision was made between the blog editorial team and myself to focus today’s blog effort on showing all the photos (well, at least until the space runs out).

I have around 30 photos on as I write this, but will add more as the day progresses, so feel free to send in more, and keep checking back on the webpage, as I will add any new ones at the top until I run out of space at least.

And please don’t forget to send in your carnival thoughts and stories through the blog comments, as we couldn’t all be there to see the great spectacle.

All the photos and action is here!  :

Nurses strike, Investment scams, Calheta camara at it again, & other snippets

February 21, 2009 By: admin Category: Uncategorized News

TODAY’S PHOTO : Many thanks to Sarah … yesterday’s children’s carnival parade in Funchal, which Sarah took and had to me by 11am yesterday, just missing the blog publication time. Even so, I bet it is the first photo on the internet!

Front Page News : source : Diário de Notícias 20/2/2009

‘Nurses on Strike’ – As mentioned yesterday, the 24 hour strike by nurses is now over, with an estimated 80%+ turn out, in “a great desire to express their discontent.” The strike mainly affected hospital admissions, as the nurses strived to draw attention to 3 issues : “Blocking the Ministry of Health on the negotiation process in the career path of nursing,” “constant instability and degradation in working conditions” and the rules and procedures “that don’t serve the services, nor the improvement of health care”.

The main story yesterday was about those Madeirans who invested their money in what they thought were guaranteed returns, only to find they have lost or are losing significant sums. In what the bank refers to as ‘scams’, in some cases the investors money was put into different investments than the clients were told. One couple who invested money 8 years ago, without touching it, found that at the end of their term there was less money than they had invested. The Diário says that there are other Madeirans they are aware of that have lost 40% of their investments. Anyway, it’s not clear whether the investments referred to were missold, mismanaged, or the customers misunderstood the risks … whatever, the complaints are rolling in.

A primary school in São Martinho, Funchal, is under fire after two six years old escaped into the streets unobserved. They were on the loose for two hours before they were detained by adults in a bar. The Police were involved, but were unsuccessful in their search. The school blames under-staffing, saying that requests for more help were not answered, and there was no security guard. It is now talking about keeping all the school doors locked once everyone is inside.

The Calheta Beach Hotel has been building a new extension without planning consent. The new structure on the roof was known about by the câmera (local council), who did nothing to stop it, and it was in fact the regional government that intervened in the end, ordering the works to be stopped. Besides requiring permission locally, the regional office of tourism and transport needs to be consulted, and that didn’t happen either. The hotel claims it is doing interior remodeling, when it is fact clear for any passer-by to see that they are actually building an extension on top of an existing roof terrace. It seems that the câmara of Calheta has a different remit than the câmeras on the rest of the island and is constantly in the press for that reason, but maybe that philosophy is the right way forward, because according to the president of the câmara, it the one part of Madeira where the recession has not yet arrived.

In the interests of growth and success, the football club Nacional is considering going more professional, when it holds its executive elections this year. At it’s AGM last year the shareholders approved an amendment for the payment of it’s management. How it can afford to pay it’s players is pretty puzzling in itself, let alone to add more costs to it’s existing commitments. If I recall correctly, aside from the club Academica, Nacional had the lowest crowds in the Portuguese top league.

In the same article, the Nacional star player Nenê is still being tugged in all directions by suitors, with a German club (possibly Hamburg) having offered €4 million for the player. Neither club or player seem to be in a rush to part company. In the meantime though, the Diário has found out that Nenê has a Portuguese grandfather, and that the Brazilian player is applying for Portuguese nationality. That process will no doubt be speeded up if the Portuguese national side need a new striker, and will open up new possibilities in Europe at club level for the player.

Other News :

The decision has been taken nationally to close a prison in Funchal, Cadeia dos Viveiros, because of problems with conditions and safety. It currently houses around 50 inmates who have problems adapting to or integrating in prison life, but is a support unit to the prison at Cancela. For example sex offenders go there, and VIPs, who may otherwise be victimised by other prisoners. These prisoners will be reallocated to other prisons nationally, and not necessarily on Madeira, decided on a case by case basis.

Whinging taxi drivers, who have been protesting recently about unfair competition from tour companies and hotels, have managed to get an audience with representatives of the regional assembly of Madeira to air their views.

We already knew that 2008 was a best year ever in some respects for tourism on Madeira, but now the national ‘bottom line’ has been published revealing a year of growth of 1.7% last year, compared to 2007. The Bank of Portugal has said that tourism last year brought in receipts of over €7.5 billion. Portuguese tourists travelling elsewhere spent less than €3 billion last year, so no doubt the money people in the government will be pretty pleased with the contribution of tourism to Portugal’s balance of payments.

The European Commission has given Portugal a good ticking off after it has consistently failed to implement measures for the protection of unique, fairly unique, and less than fairly unique species, on and around Madeira and the Azores. By now there should have been 36 designated conservation areas in place.

This weekend’s football: both our teams are away on Sunday at 4pm, with Nacional visiting Amadora and Marítimo at Académica. Neither is televised. The big game of the weekend is Sporting hosting Benfica today at 8pm (SportTV1).

The Italians are back!, Politicians get 3 weeks off, School campaign, & other snippets

February 20, 2009 By: admin Category: Uncategorized News

TODAY’S PHOTO : Thanks to Sarah … são Lorenço. Does anyone know why some male saints are ‘São’ and others are ‘Santo’? Someone gave me an explanation the other day, but it wasn’t very convincing.

Front Page News : source : Diário de Notícias 19/2/2009

Main headline : ‘Italians return to Porto Santo’. The details are still unclear, but some agreement has been reached with the Italian charter operator to continue travelling to Porto Santo Island. The first flight is due in on Sunday with around 100 passengers, after flights were discontinued last month. This time though the flight is not direct from Milan, stopping at Malaga (Spain) on both legs of the journey. It seems that the change of heart has not come through negotiation with our government, who allegedly wouldn’t even discuss the matter, but is more likely due to the increased number of travellers possible through the Malaga stopover. Details and facts are still sketchy, and it seems the continuation is only guaranteed until the end of March, but it sounds like good and potentially great news for the good people of PSI.

Three decades after the air disaster at Santa Catarina, the Diário talks to one of the 33 survivors, that they found living in Arco de São Jorge, this particular man having rescued a child on that night. For anyone not familiar with the story, I found this on Wikipedia (modified for reproduction here):

TAP Air Portugal Flight 425, was a Boeing 727 aircraft named Sacadura Cabral en route from Belgium to Funchal Airport, Portugal, with an scheduled stop in Lisbon, Portugal on November 19, 1977. Shortly before 9:48pm on that Saturday evening, after 13 hours and 15 minutes of service time, the tired crew was trying to land the airplane on the difficult Madeira airport runway, which at the time was 1600 meters long. After two unsuccessful attempts to land, the Captain  and Co-pilot decided to make one last try to land the plane, before they would have to make the decision to divert to the Canary Islands. While on final approach in heavy rain, strong winds and poor visibility, the aircraft touched down 600 metres past the touchdown threshold, and started hydroplaning. With just about 900 metes of runway left, the crew tried desperately to stop, applying maximum reverse thrust and brakes, but the aircraft slid off the runway with a ground speed of approximately 43 knots and plunged over a 60 metre feet steep bank hitting a nearby bridge and crashing on the beach. The plane split into two pieces and burst into flames. Of the 164 people aboard (156 passengers and 8 crew), 131 were killed, making it the worst ever airplane accident in Portugal at that time. After the accident occurred, TAP stopped flying the Boeing 727-200 to Madeira, and started flying only the 727-100, which was six metres shorter and took 60 fewer passengers. The crash prompted officials to explore ways of extending the short runway. Because of the height of the runway relative to the beach below, an extension was very difficult and too expensive to build, but between 1982 and 1986 a 200 meter extension was eventually built. Fourteen years later the runway was again extended. Following the 2000 extension, the runway measured 2781 meters long and was capable of handling wide body commercial jets like the Boeing 747 or the Airbus A340.

The municipal market of ‘Penteada’ in São Roque was robbed very early on Wednesday morning, with the thief(s) doing the round of the shops there and getting away with €750 and probably other stuff too. The market is fitted with alarm sensors, has security cameras, and employs a security company for vigilance, but it all went unnoticed, and it seems like even the cameras have no footage of the crime.

A few days ago it was reported that two new multi-storey buildings are to be constructed on Rua 5 de Outubro in Funchal (Santa Luzia), and there is now an artists impression, a floor plan, and more details available. There will be over 1,000 new parking spaces available in total. The north building will cost €16 million, and will include 32 apartments. There will be ‘green area’ public square of over 3,000 square metres.

In a dig at the holidays of politicians, the Diário points out that the last gathering of the legislative assembly of Madeira was on the 11th of February, with the next one scheduled for the 3rd March … in other words, a 3 week holiday break for carnival. Will we notice too much, I don’t think so! I really still don’t understand what they do of any value for their 20 x minimum salaries. Hardworking students like me and my classmates just get next week off school … life just isn’t fair!

 Other News :

The police are running a four month campaign aimed at telling older school children that leisure time is not for drugs, alcohol, and tobacco, and that violence, crime, and petty theft are not socially acceptable or ways to fill time outside of school. The campaign started this week and runs until the end of June (just in time for the Summer holidays perhaps?).

The appeal for potential bone marrow donors has brought in two thousand people in just two weeks.

Midnight last night signified the start of a national nurses strike, although it is promised that ‘Urgencias’ (Accident & Emergency) would not be affected. Although it is called a national strike I have not read anything in the local press to say what, if any, effect it would have on Madeira.

Where is president Bertie? I haven’t had any juicy news about him for ages. Could it be that the Diário has been censored, or threatened? Without Bertie’s antics the news seems drab. Could this be the calm before the storm (election year)?

I would like to thank Trevor who emailed me to say that : “You talk of an item being ‘fairly unique’. Something is either unique or it isn’t. If it’s unique there is only one of it, if there’s more than one of it it isn’t fairly unique, rather unique, very unique or any other kind of unique.” Thank you Trevor for the free lesson, I don’t recall saying it, but it’s my blog and if I wish to express myself using the flexibility the English language gives me then I will. I can imagine a conversation with you being fairly uninteresting. To prove the point when I can I will use more frequently expressions like those you mention and include ‘commonly unique’, ‘as unique as toenails’, and ‘uniquely mass produced’, just because I can.
