More holidays for less, Young Madeirans prefer the UK, and not much else!

Despite the economic problems, we on Madeira are continuing to go on holidays, in fact more than previously, but the types of holidays chosen are changing. Low cost travel (by air, or by ferry to Portugal / Canary Islands) is definitely changing the shape of travel, because families can save so much money on the journey costs. A big travel agent, Mundo Vip Madeira, says that the number of travellers has increased 18% on 2007, but pointed out that people are asking for cheaper options. The package to the Canary Islands, the old favourite, is sold out until the end of September. Caribbean, Cape Verde and the Tunisia are the more popular destinations outside of Europe, whilst Brazil is falling in popularity.

The United Kingdom is the current favoured destination for emigrating Madeirans, where there are already 120,000 living (YES ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY THOUSAND!), whilst the scattering of Madeirans worldwide amounts to around one million. South Africa (400,000) and Venezuela (300,000) have the largest Madeiran communities, but they are aging, and the young and more dynamic are definitely headed for the UK. Could the last youngster leaving Madeira  please turn off the lights!

The big front page picture is of ‘Danny’, a Portuguese footballer who is likely to be transferred within Russia for a massive €30 million.

Other news :

Having scoured the newspaper front to back, there is again nothing that warrants the effort of a translation, unless you want to know about a cracked pavement, a rubbish and recycling point that gets overfilled, or a man who puts trash in his neighbours garden.

Marítimo lost 0-1 yesterday in a game at Naval. Nacional also played and won 3 – 1 away at Leixões, putting them top of the Portuguese league!

Helen wrote in to comment on the Funchal 500 celebrations … sounds like another dissatisfied customer “On the whole, the celebrations were very disappointing and there were long gaps between events which made it a very long day.  The parade was mainly very sombre, if you had stumbled across it, you would think it was a funeral celebration.  The fireworks were very good but probably not as good as at New Year. As usual, the publicity was very poor.  Even though we had a programme, I rather suspect we missed some things.  If anyone had flown in specially for this, they would be disappointed.  I hate to offer such negative comments but the whole event had a very amateurish feel about it. Such a shame.”

I had a letter from CaboTV last week, or Zon Madeira as I think they are now known. In a desperate attempt to get new and retain old customers, they are now offering the telephone facility free of charge for 12 months (unlimited free calls to Portuguese land lines), which was previously €9.99 per month. I had a look at their website and the offer was there for all to see, so I thought it was fair play that they wrote to me to tell me. However, you have to contact them to get switched to the ‘free phone’ deal, so why didn’t they just do it anyway … because they want me to feel loved I expect, but also so I agree to keep my whole TV / Internet / Phone deal for another 12 months.

So now we have 4 options for TV, including just a normal TV ariel, but excluding the illegal reception of Sky TV. We are feeling the benefits of the new found competition I am sure, but the confusion also. Do I go for Meo or Zon, what is going to be the best deal, and how come Meo has more channels than Zon, and what about the new Zon box HD … do I need it? Has anyone worked out in rough terms which is the best deal for TV, phone and internet, either in packages or individually … not an easy task if you don’t understand Portuguese.

ps – of those who volunteered to trial the ‘sign in’ version of the madeira4u blog, as far as I can see Alan is the only one who tried it. Tobi, Vic and Sam did you get the email invitations I sent?

Football crowds, Tourist catches Blue Marlin, Ferry changes, Grape picking, & little else

Very little of interest in yesterday’s paper, bit of ‘after the lord mayors show’  going on I think.

In what seem to be a space filler, the headline ‘Barreiros, 4 – Choupana, 1′, signifying the the football club Marítimo had an average of 5,700 spectators for each of it’s 15 home games last season, whereas Nacional averaged barely 1,500. You can see more such stats at this useful website www.lpfp.pt . The new Portugal Football season got underway Friday night with Guimarães and Setúbal drawing one apiece. Both Nacional and Marítimo start their season this afternoon at 5pm, both away to fairly unexciting teams, and neither game is on TV. Is it just coincidence, or are the 5 televised games (out of 8 games this weekend) chosen to avoid Madeira’s teams?

The other headline stories are about the lack of places to stay in Seixal during the weekend festa, the commercialisation of authentic Madeiran entertainment to suit tourism, and the fact that there are 20 cases of alcohol induced comas on Porto Santo each month (well it does have 20,000 visitors there at the moment).

Other news :

Madeira section, nothing. Political section, nothing. Economy section, almost nothing except this:

A Russian tourist who has never been fishing before was pretty surprised when on a tourist boat trip ended up catching a 334kg Blue Marlin, about 600 metres off the coast from Funchal. Question 1 – You have to ask, if it was a routine tourist fishing trip, why was this guy using such a high gauge fishing line capable of holding 334kg?

And question 2, why does that article appear in the economy section?

But I kept a few snippets back just for such an occasion:

Naviera Armas, the company that owns the ferry that covers the route between the Canary Island, Madeira, and Portimão in Portugal, says that it is considering using a faster boat next year and doing the round trip twice weekly instead of the current weekly one. The possible candidate (ship) for the job is currently being built in the north of Spain, and as well as being faster, has more passenger capacity as well as around 600 beds. If it’s that much faster, then surely there is less need for a bed?

1st September is the official start date for the grape picking season (although as previously mentioned it has already started in some quarters). It is rumoured to be a ‘vintage year’, with 1100 farmers picking around 4,000 tons of red grapes.

BTW, many thanks to those who have posted links to madeira4u on the Madeira Island bulletin board … long may it continue. If you want to put a ‘live link’ on the bulletin board, i.e. one you can click on, just cut and paste the complete address from the window at the top of the page, which will look like this for this blog … http://www.madeira4u.com/blog.html for example.

Olympic gold, Funchal 5000, Busman's holiday, Bad debt, and other snippets

August 23, 2008 By: admin Category: Uncategorized News

TODAY’S PHOTO : Thanks to Helen … Funchal 500 celebrations, Portugal Air Force ‘fly by’.

Front Page News : source : Diário de Notícias 22/8/2008

Even the Funchal 500 news was overshadowed by the Olympic news in the athletics, in the Men’s Triple Jump, where Nelson Évora won Portugal’s first gold medal. That’s a gold and a silver now, by Portuguese standards one of each colour would make 2008 a pretty reasonable result. On the national news on TVI that night, the excitement was such that the first 15 minutes were devoted just to that one story.

The companies of Madeira have so far withstood the effect of the recession here pretty well, with the numbers remaining stable, and with new companies replacing those that fail. The situation is quite different in Portugal generally though, with thousands of companies dissolved. However, the growth of Madeira’s companies has slowed right down, with few new opportunities of employment.

President Jardim generously interrupted his Port Santo holiday to attend the Funchal 500 celebrations. In the spirit of the occasion, he took the opportunity to mention “the hypocrisy, the colonial authoritarianism and the political-partisan mediocrity” that deny rights to the Madeiran people, in an allusion to the central State. I am pretty confident in the translation, but not so clear in the meaning. Anyone care to analyse that comment?

Talking of Funchal 500, as I was unable to go as I am sure were many others, would love to know your views of the highlights or whatever. There are reports in the newspaper, but your views would be first hand and more interesting. We have already heard from Tobi who was disappointed with the ‘size’ and lateness of the air display (I did mention it Tobi, on the blog of 19th July), and thought the fireworks were just OK. And Andrew who found the Historical Procession that night disappointing. Anyone have anything enthusiastic to say?

Other news :

I suppose it comes as no great surprise, this being Madeira and all that, but the bus company ‘Rodoeste’ that serves the whole west and most of the north of the island out to Porto Moniz, Calheta and beyond, took a public holiday for Funchal 500. For sure some of the drivers live in Funchal, but many more don’t. Anyway, they decided to run a public holiday service, and didn’t put out notices or warn the public, leaving many people normally working and travelling stranded. One lady said she went to catch the 12.40 bus, waited until 15.30, and then just gave up and went home still not knowing what was going on. Others missed doctor’s appointments and whatever. Disgraceful behaviour!

Believe it or not, but the Diário has a correspondent in South Africa, who was complaining about the fact the Madeirans over there knew nothing about the Funchal 500 celebrations, and were therefore unable to celebrate the event. Hmm, now Sir you can imagine what it is like being a foreigner living on Madeira … probably something like it is for a Madeiran living abroad.

In what I think is a national story, and according to figures from the Bank of Portugal, bad credit or “credit of doubtful collection” increased 20.6 percent from June 2007 to June 2008, reaching the highest levels ever. Pretty staggering and obviously unsustainable … I don’t think I will be bothering to ask for a bank loan in the foreseeable future, nor investing in Portuguese banks.

That’s it for today … have a good weekend (the temperatures have dropped a bit now, so that should help).
