Church to help poor, Madeiran Olympian, Madelena do Mar beach, Mugging, etc …

July 25, 2008 By: admin Category: Uncategorized News

TODAY’S PHOTO : Thanks to Dave … another shot of the banana festival in Madelena do Mar last weekend.

Front Page News : source : Diário de Notícias 24/7/2008

Lead story is the church’s pledge to help the ‘young’ poor of Madeira, saying that the politicians have little interest. The parish priest of Sé cathedral is looking for support from the christian community, in particular to donate to help with poverty. “There are ‘young poor’ beating daily on the door of the parish priest of the Cathedral in despair.” Politicians and businessmen are asked to stop the chat and take action. The young poor (typically 25-40) are a fairly new phenomenon, being people with financial commitments and jobs, who just can’t stretch their income to meet expenditure needs.

Another lead article is about an abandoned whaling boat in poor repair that may be used as an exhibit at the whaling museum to be built in Caniçal. The museum has already made enquiries about obtaining 12 model whales, and an electronic interactive kiosk. It will narrate the history of whaling and the associated industry of Madeira, but also promote the cause for conservation.

This weekend sees the festival in Chão da Lagoa, or more truthfully known as the major annual political rally of the Social Democratic Party led by President Jardim. I have no intention of plugging the event, and I only mention it to say that I wish they would go around and take down the publicity afterwards. We still have flags on the lampposts here from the same event in 2007.

The 3000 metre obstacle (hurdles?) course in the Sporting Center of the Madeira saw a 8 minute 24 second completion time by Madeira man Alberto Paulo, who will now go to the Olympic Games in Beijing. A personal best for Alberto, and the best time run in Portugal for at least 4 years.

Other News :

Tomorrow (26th) is Grandparents Day. Never heard of that one, but as it doesn’t impact me in any way, it just leaves me to say happy GD to any grandparent readers who might be celebrating.

Regular features about the beaches of Madeira have been appearing during the last few weeks, and this time it is the turn of Madelena do Mar (west of Ponta do Sol). With blue flag, parking, changing rooms, showers, and sports area, playground and beach library (summer only), everything provided is free. But you have to pay €1 for the sunbeds and parasols. It also has a pontoon, which means you can arrive by boat without getting your feet wet. 2 restaurants offer specialities of fresh fish and shellfish, most of which work out at a cost of around €13 for a meal. Only one girl was asked for an opinion, and she said she preferred it as it was before, particularly disliking the pontoon and the fact that the pebbles used to be smaller.

A French tourist visiting Madeira for the first time was mugged at the miradouro of Pico da Torre, in Câmara de Lobos on Wednesday afternoon. She was ‘jumped’ by a man hiding behind a wall who took her handbag and contents, and her camera, leaving her almost unconscious. The man ran off into a banana plantation, and police are still looking for him. There is a very sad picture of the poor lady in a state of shock straight after the incident. I don’t think these idiots realise the damage they do to the reputation of this generally very safe island, or they don’t care. It’s just a handbag with €50 and camara at the end of the day, but that poor lady will never forget and won’t be back, her family and friends will probably never come, and anyone else who hears about it will be put off. The already soiled image of Câmara de Lobos may soon be known in the guide books as a place or thing to avoid when visiting Madeira, along with the scams in the Fruit Market in Funchal.

The 20 year old man, seriously injured in the car accident with fatalities at the weekend, remains in hospital in a coma. The Diario says that the last weeks events with 4 road deaths have really shocked the population.

The new Hiper Sá that opens in Santana today promises to “revitalise the economy of that area”. The store cost around €7 million, and will be inaugurated at 6pm this afternoon. Also in the complex are outlets for electrical goods and other shops. “Revitalise the economy of that area” sounds like fat cat spin to me, as we all know it will put many others out of business, but that is just the way it is. So why dress it up as something else when people may change their shopping habits but will have no extra money to spend, giving a net benefit close to zero.

A new website with high definition photography of Madeira can be found at www.madeirahd.350.com . It looks nice, but  the pages took so long to load that I gave up after a couple of minutes. That may be down to a bad moment on my internet connection.

Santana "under developed", Wedding lists gone, Bank overcharges, Boat Casino, etc.

July 24, 2008 By: admin Category: Uncategorized News

TODAY’S PHOTO : ‘Posing Lizard’ … thanks to Eiryl

Front Page News : source : Diário de Notícias 23/7/2008

Big picture on the front page showing the ‘A’ frame houses in Santana, with the district back in the news again. This story is about the president of the town council complaining that Santana is too green, and the restrictions on building make it very difficult to develop the area.

Couples getting married here are tending to move away from the traditional wedding present list, laments one shopowner, who says he used to do well until recent times. Long gone are the crockery sets, and in come the leisure offerings from the travel agencies. One business complained that it had not received a wedding list for two years. Not quite sure how this works, but perhaps the couple ask for money gifts to go towards a honeymoon ?

Banks here are sitting on over €2 million overcharged to mortgage customers, as a result of illegal charges that were made between 1995 and 2006 which were not legitimized until 2007. It seems that the banks have no obligation to proactively make the refunds, and that the Madeiran’s are not knocking on the bank’s door asking for their money back either. The amount accumulated at the rate of 10 centythingies per month, for every €1,000 on loan for every month between the two dates mentioned.

Other News:

The court in Funchal gave out suspended jail sentences to two men on Tuesday for drug trafficking. One received a term of 5 years, the other 4 years and 3 months.

The cruise ship ‘Grand Celebration’ applied for and was granted a licence to operate it’s casino whilst visiting Madeira, and is the first ship to do so. Portuguese citizens will not be able to use the casino though. It raises the question that as most cruise ships that arrive at Madeira have casinos, do they close the facility whilst docked, or continue to operate without licence and therefore illegally.

The regional government has been given around €15 million from European funds for the purpose of funding projects of investigation and development in the field of ‘technology and innovation’. Companies and individuals will be able to apply for funding for suitable projects.

In national news the main story is the release of the McCann parents as suspects in the case of the missing Madelene. The article reports the fury of the family reflected in the British press, and the latest news is that the McCanns are considering legal action for the way the case was handled. A sad and tragic case, and I for one will be glad to see the back of it having given up hope of poor Madie ever being found, but I feel that the bad press has been largely undeserved as far as Portugal goes. You cannot lose sight of the neglect that allowed the abduction originally, and you cannot blame a police force for not responding in the same way as might have happened in the UK, when the frequency and nature of such crimes is totally different.

How to ‘brake’ the number of deaths on the roads of Madeira, asks the DIÁRIO in its readers participation section. With 14 deaths already this year, the total for 2007 has already been passed. The most recent contribution is from a lady who lost her brother in a road accident. Suggestions include stricter policing, more rigid rules, obligatory wearing of seat belts for all passengers (I thought that’s been in for years?), better and earlier tuition for drivers, reduce speed limits, ‘zero tolerance’, etc etc.

Talking about rip-offs in the fruit market reminded me of a conversation with a friend this week that had just come back from Costa do Sol (Spain). He said that the resort was a bit upmarket, but at night in the bars he was charged €8 for a bottled water, €20 for a vodka and lime (but you could buy the whole bottle of vodka for €185 and save some money). He also went in a night club where he had to stand up, as a member of staff told him that to sit down at a table with his friends would cost them a whacking €1,000 (yes … € one thousand).

Road accidents, Robbery solved, The Sower moves, New bank, New fire station, etc.

July 23, 2008 By: admin Category: Uncategorized News

TODAY’S PHOTO : Thanks to Dave … the banana festival in Madelena do Mar last weekend. “It was a really nice evening (actually the event lasted the whole weekend) plus a small exhibition and lots of bananas too!”

Front Page News : source : Diário de Notícias 22/7/2008

It seems to be becoming a regular feature now, the Via Rapida weekly report (finished Sunday). For the last week : 21 vehicle accidents, 3 dead, 4 injured, 91 mechanical breakdowns & 7 vehicles ‘parked’ for no apparent reason, 10 wandering animals removed, 39 objects of large dimension removed, and 10 people warned for travelling on foot. That sounds pretty dreadful for a small stretch of 2 lane motorway of under 50km. This ought to be a priority issue for the government to try and improve the figures, but you don’t hear about any initiatives.

A tourist from Belgium was robbed in the area of Ajuda on Sunday morning, by two young men in a car. A witness phoned the police and the car was stopped shortly later, complete with the wallet, money, credit cards, and camera, which were returned to the tourist. Clever crime it seems has not yet found its way here, and the police must be very grateful for that.

In another gripping headline story, the statue of ‘The Sower’, previously in St. Catherine’s Park, is to be moved to Largo do Município.

It will come as a great relief to those concerned that Madeira has insufficient competition in the banking sector, that in 2009 a new bank will open on Madeira. Caixa Agrícola, is being formed by a lawyer named Coito Pita (a name which translates perfectly into English with an interesting outcome) with other Madeiran partners. It’s like a national obsession to pack Madeira with as many banks as possible, that I can only put down to the very attractive profit margins. My town of less than 5,000 people (but a much larger catchment area) has 6 bank branches … how do they manage to survive?

Other News :

The inauguration of the new fire station in Câmara de Lobos took place on Monday, attended of course by President Jardim. It cost €3 million to build, and protects the second largest population centre on Madeira. It has 40 firemen, of which 23 are permanent. The fire station building project undertaken by this government will be complete in 2011. Outstanding are Calheta (currently being constructed) and Porto Santo Island, currently in the planning stage. I can’t believe they need 40 firemen to cover Câmara de Lobos, but as they drive the ambulances as well perhaps that’s why there are so many.

The National Institute of Statistics has released information that confirms what we all already know … building houses on Madeira is a long drawn out process. The average time taken to build a house, from design to completion is 13 months, but despite forecasting in line with this, Madeira’s builders are more likely to take 26 months. In the Azores, the total time taken is more likely to be 10 months, and Madeira has almost the worst record  in the whole of Portugal.

Some trips on the Madeira-Portugal-Canaries ferry are already sold out during July and August.

Hugo Chávez, the leader of Venezuela pays a visit to Portugal today in a visit of economic and political purpose. He will meet with prime minister José Sócrates, and discuss various areas of cooperation in trade, to add to those agreed in May regarding the supply to Portugal of petroleum and gas products.

Saw this on the UK Daily Telegraph website, in a write up from a journalist who visited Madeira in April :

“At all costs avoid …

Buying exotic fruit from the market without checking the price. The charming sellers may sting you with a huge bill.”

I am not sure if she is suggesting that the exotic fruit is expensive, or something more sinister.

However in the comments for that article someone wrote “you are right about those fruit sellers 100% bandits but oh so charming” … I think that clarified matters!
