New Smoking Law? madeira4u in risk of rockfall!

The smoking issue just won’t go away. After the president of Madeira was caught earlier this week smoking illegally in a hotel restaurant, it now turns out that the government is looking into ways to make the filthy habit more acceptable in bars, cafes etc. It seems that the Spanish ‘no smoking’  (v2.0) model is the favoured approach, which would mean that any establishment, regardless of size and the existence of smoke extraction equipment, would be able to be either a ‘smoking’ or ‘non smoking’ establishment. Now that’s democracy, and now I realise why Madeira is called an ‘Autonomous’ region of Portugal. What an innovative suggestion … I wonder why no one had thought of that one before?

Normally I find most of the local news of little interest, even though often quite quaint. Stories about the governments inaugurations, lightweigh political squabbles, planning and construction blunders, school lunch menus, you know the sort of thing. However, in browsing through todays paper online, a small front page story caught my eye that I could have quite easily missed if it wasn’t for a vaguely familiar looking photographic view … exactly the same view I see when looking out from my veranda, and from more or less taken from the same position, but slightly above because my roof is clearly visible.

However, the second photo (shown above) was the one that makes this (for me that is) perhaps the most important news item I have ever covered in this blog, and it’s regarding an extremely large piece of mountain ready to drop off, complete with a couple of houses on top. So I popped outside and looked up, and sure enough I have exactly that same view as that shown in the second photograph.

With fingers a tremmmmbling I picked my way through the article which started …  ”In the regional road Ribeira Brrrrava to Camponnnnário, next to the miradouro, the imminent risk of destruction … (and goes on) … an unstable rocky formation exists that threatens to collapse to any moment … the situation is well worse since there is dwelling under the cliff.” YES YOU GUESSED IT!

However, I read onnnn, and I quote:

“The councilman with the remit of the Environment admits him to the NEWSPAPER and guarantees that the intention is going to consolidate the rocky formation.  But there are bureaucracies it follow, what also hinders the intervention in the land.  José Irineu says that to Council already communicated the matter to the Regional Directiorate of Roads –
because the threat involves also a regional road – but not obtain answer. “

Boy, I feel so much better now that my local council is thinking about the matter.

So, if the blogs stop … fear the worst!

Hotel Management Strike?, 5 Star Camping in Porto Santo, More CaboTV Internet

The Porto Santo Ferry should be back in service now … has anyone seen it?

Source : Diário de Notícias 24/1/2008

Hotel Management threaten to strike in March due to proposed revisions to their employment contracts and plans to review their status as a professional group. That was the outcome of a meeting yesterday involving the trade union representing Hotel Managers. Also the proposal for a wage increase of 1% is fueling the proposed action. The TU representative feels that the proposals will leave his members with a status on a par with “cooks”.

Porto Santo seems to get missed out in the news coverage, so here is an effort to readdress the balance.

Porto Santo was promised a new campsite last summer, and the contract for the works has been going through the tendering process. €3.8 million has been earmarked for the project, which will sit somewhere between the airport and the town centre (Vila Baleira) and will occupy a space of around 24,000 square metres. Under the plans, a new facilities will be constructed which will include spas, changing rooms, a swimming pool, a snack bar, extensive gardens, and a minimarket. The government’s website describes this as ’5 Star’ facility. With all those facilities, 5 star status, and €3.8 million in the pot, isn’t this really a single story hotel without room service?

CaboTV rang back later on yesterday (see blog) and said that the broadband deal offered by PT was only for the first 3 months, and thereafter actually became more expensive than the CaboTV deal. I talked through the fact that I was only getting a 2Mbps service instead of 18Mbps with CaboTV, and I was told that the daily range could be anywhere between 0Mbps and 18Mbps, and that according to their judgement as long as they peaked once in the month at 18Mbps they were OK with their claim. What cadswallop! I have tested the speed regularly, and never have I had over 2Mbps … watch this space!

Blog for WEDNESDAY 23rd JANUARY 2008

Lots of news stories yesterday, so here are a couple more:

Source : Diário de Notícias 22/1/2008

The relevant authorities were yesterday called to investigate a complaint made by a consumer against a restaurant (name and location unstated) but it also does a ‘take-away’ service. On Sunday afternoon a family out for a meal were somewhat disturbed to observe that the daughters meal included a cockroach. Unable to find the owner on the premises, a formal complaint was lodged. One of the owners has now confirmed the facts and commented that “It is unknown whether it was a joke of the client or the responsibility of the restaurant”. Now I know many people who on the way out for Sunday lunch, stop off and pick-up a cockroach or two, and then put them on their uneaten dinner, just for a laugh. However, making such a comment to a reporter doesn’t exactly smack of common sense. I don’t know which restaurant this was, but if word gets out I will be adding it to my list of places not to visit.

Last weekend was one of troubles, with at least seven houses robbed.  As well as gold and computer equipment, the hunger of theft was so great that food from the refrigerator and pantry also disappeared. São António was the area worst hit. (the rest of this story is now machine translation) Of the interior of a home in the Naughty one of the Fifth one of the Nuns, nearby the Jamboto, disappeared several articles in gold evaluated in more of 1,500 euros.  The door was closed (in the latch), but the daring vagabond was not done requested and took advantage of it leaves.

In todays news:

There were 289 divorces decreed by the court in Madeira in 2007, compared to 567 in 2006, and 548 in 2005. In 2006, the divorce rate was around 2.3 people per thousand inhabitants. The numbers for 2007 are well down  on previous years for reasons that are not particularly clear, but are probably offset by separations of mutual consent.

In a dinner hosted by the Association of Constuction and Industry at the Tivoli Ocean Park Hotel, our president, Alberto Joâo Jardim, openly flaunted the new anti-smoking laws by lighting up a chunky cigar in the dining room. Having started a bad example, he was swiftly followed by a number of others present, so much so that the hotel had to go and dig out some of their dusty old ashtrays … this makes todays front page photo … a fine example!

Apparently, Madeira is on yellow alert, due to strong winds. They are certainly not visible from where I’m sitting.

If CaboTV is your internet service provider, this might interest. I had an email from PT (telephone company) yesterday offering 16Mbps broadband for about €25 per month, so I contacted CaboTV and said I was thinking of moving unless they could do me a better deal as I currently pay €35 per month. They rang me this morning and said the package I was on with them was for 18Mbps. I laughed, and said I would get back to them. I tested my connection 3 times today, and the best result I got was 2Mbps! That’s like buying a 9kg sack of potatoes, only to get them home and find there is only 1kg in the sack. How do they get away with it!
